The clearance around the station is very good and the concrete surfaces are relatively distant. This is a good station.

Re: Weather stations in BC (photos)
I agree that it's a good one, however, answer me this, Rocket Scientist: Why does Revelstoke have two stations at the airport (one by EC and one by Nav Canada) with the temperatures often being up to 5 degrees apart on hot days.Canada Goose wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2019 6:11 pm The clearance around the station is very good and the concrete surfaces are relatively distant. example 1: EC station = 34.6C on July 13th, 2018; Nav Canada = 31.8C
example 2: EC = 37.1C on July 8th, 2017; Nav Canada = 32.6!!!
EDIT: Interestingly enough, the hourly data for the EC station peaked at 32.9C, so maybe just a faulty thermometer by EC!

Re: Weather stations in BC (photos)
I've often noticed that Nav Canada stations seems to have a cold bias. I notice it a lot with nighttime temperatures, as well (actually, moreso than daytime).Glacier wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2019 9:08 am I agree that it's a good one, however, answer me this, Rocket Scientist: Why does Revelstoke have two stations at the airport (one by EC and one by Nav Canada) with the temperatures often being up to 5 degrees apart on hot days.

Huh, EC's rules...Glacier wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2019 9:08 am I agree that it's a good one, however, answer me this, Rocket Scientist: Why does Revelstoke have two stations at the airport (one by EC and one by Nav Canada) with the temperatures often being up to 5 degrees apart on hot days.

Let's have a look at the hourly data:
On July 8, 2017:
Time - Revelstoke A - Revelstoke Airport Auto (difference)
12:00: 20.7 - 26.4 (+5.7)
01:00: 19.5 - 27.6 (+8.1)
02:00: 23.5 - 28.9 (+5.4)
03:00: 23.9 - 29.1 (+5.2)
04:00: 24.0 - 31.7 (+7.7)
05:00: 31.2 - 32.9 (+0.7)
06:00: 31.6 - 32.6 (+1.0)
07:00: 28.4 - 29.5 (+1.1)
TMax: 32.6 - 37.1 (+4.5)
Since the 2 stations are supposed to be almost at the same place, the readings are totally inconsistent.
Furthermore, the Tmax of the 2nd station is 4.2C higher than the hourly Tmax, which is highly unlikely and suspicious.
And a 4.5C difference between the 2 Tmax is impossible.
On July 13, 2018:
Time - Revelstoke A - Revelstoke Airport Auto (difference)
12:00: 22.0 - 24.0 (+2.0)
01:00: 26.1 - 28.8 (+2.7)
02:00: 31.6 - 31.4 (-0.2)
03:00: 30.4 - 31.2 (+0.8)
04:00: 26.5 - 30.4 (+3.9)
05:00: 29.0 - 29.8 (+0.8)
06:00: 27.4 - 28.0 (+0.6)
07:00: 25.6 - 26.7 (+1.1)
Tmax: 31.8 - 34.6 (+2.8)
The readings are more close but still very different at certain hours (1:00, 4:00).
The Tmax of the 2nd station is 3.2C higher than the hourly Tmax, still too much...
A difference of 2.8C between the 2 Tmax is here again highly unlikely.
As Abby_wx said, there's a looooot of problems with some data, especially since 2013 or so (when NAVCAN replaced many EC stations).
I've noticed a lot of incoherences with YVR station when the sky is clear.
For example, I don't believe in the June record on June 30, 2013 (!). The hourly max was 26.1C and the Tmax was supposedly 31.2C!
In short, this is a real nightmare...

Re: Weather stations in BC (photos)
You are so right. I just ran a quick run at 2019 data for 7 airports in BC that have both stations.
In 100% of them, the cold bias exists at night. The daytime is less so, but look at Kamloops! Dease lake has an interesting trend!

Maybe the station still exists but nobody operates it...
One day I will go there to check.

We expect a full report Sheriff Goosey you may have to issue a fine for aborting a functional weather station.Canada Goose wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2019 3:10 pm Maybe the station still exists but nobody operates it...

The station is located here, which is way too close to the asphalt.
What kind of structure is this anyway?
