West Vancouver Island
Rain, at times heavy, continues.

A strong Pacific frontal system over northern Vancouver Island will remain nearly stationary tonight then shift southward on Wednesday. This storm is forecast to bring widespread heavy rainfall to the west coast of Vancouver Island. For Tofino and communities further north such as Zeballos and Tahsis, heavy rain is expected to continue tonight. As the front begins to move southward early Wednesday, heavy rain will start to impact communities south of Tofino.

Total rainfall amounts in the range of 100 to 150 mm can be expected for this event.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Snowfall warning in effect for:

Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
5 to 25 cm of snowfall accumulation by late Friday morning.

An intense Pacific low and front brewing in the Gulf of Alaska this afternoon will approach the south coast on Friday. The system is sliding down from the northwest so there will little be warming of the cool airmass in place over the Lower Mainland.

As a result, precipitation will fall mostly as snow over Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, Snow will begin late this evening and continue until late morning, or midday Friday.

Total amounts will be highly dependent on elevation and proximity to the water. The highest amounts will be over the North Shore and the northeast sector of Metro Vancouver. The higher elevations of West and North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey and Maple Ridge will get 15 to 25 cm accumulation by late morning.

The City of Vancouver and Burnaby will receive 10 to 15 cm total.

At low elevations and near the Straight Georgia ( for example, Richmond) accumulations will likely be up to 5 cm.

The Fraser Valley will see 10 to 15 cm total accumulation by midday Friday. The higher end of the range will occur north of the Fraser River.

A series of vigorous frontal systems will move across the south coast of BC Tuesday night through Saturday. They will bring periods of heavy rain and strong winds in the first active storm cycle of the the fall season.

The first system arrives on Vancouver Island Tuesday night, and will spread to the mainland before Wednesday morning and continue through Thursday.

Rainfall intensity will vary through the day and across regions. Over Vancouver Island, total rainfall amounts over the two day period will generally range from 15 to 40 mm, with amounts excess of 100 mm over West Vancouver Island.

For the mainland coast, total rainfall amounts will range from 50 mm to in excess of 100 mm over the two day period. The heaviest rainfall amounts are currently expected over Howe Sound and the North Shore.

This system will also bring strong southeast winds to the west coast of Vancouver Island Tuesday night, with winds of 60 to 80 km/h. As the system progresses, winds across the Strait of Georgia and surrounding regions will peak early Wednesday morning at 50 to 70 km/h.

The combination of heavy rain with leaves on the ground may lead to localized flooding. Strong winds may also lead to power outages.

The wet pattern will continue with more rain expected Friday and Saturday.

Rainfall and wind warnings may be issued as the system approaches.

Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver

Rain, at times heavy, is expected.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for Howe Sound and the North Shore as a vigorous frontal system arrives on the coast today. Rainfall amounts of 40-70 mm are forecast by Thursday morning.

Strong southerly winds of will accompany the frontal system. Through Howe Sound winds will rise to 40 to 60 km/h this morning and will gradually ease by this evening.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Heavy rainfall will continue over Howe Sound and Metro Vancouver today, and will spread to the Fraser Valley tonight. This moisture-laden system will deliver 40-70 mm of rain by Thursday morning.

Rainfall rates will lessen on Thursday but persistent moist, onshore flow will cause showers, heavy at times, to continue Thursday. The heaviest rain amounts are expected near the mountains and eastern sections of the Fraser Valley.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.
