Random Stats

Here's your first stat. This graph shows every single annual hot spot in Canada since 1900.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... 333335&z=5

Notes:
  • Some of them are questionable. eg. All three Greenwood figures.
    Weather stations come and go,
EDIT: Some SHOCKING stats!
  • Warfield was the Canadian hot spot for the first time ever 2019.
  • Lytton hasn't been the Canadian hotspot since 2013. That's 7 years ago!
  • Oosyoos hasn't been the Canadian hotspot since 2002! That's 17 years ago!
  • Lillooet hasn't been the Canadian hotspot since 1972!!! That's 47 years ago!
  • Kitmat is the northernmost and westernmost place to be the Canadian hot spot.

I'm working on correcting the weather extremes in Canada.

What do you think? Goose?

Okay, Goose would like some Quebec spots, so let me add some more. Remember that Old Crow is so far north that it goes ZERO energy from the sun in December. In other words, the diurnal temperature variation is entirely due to cold fronts and warm fronts passing through, which produces much higher variations than Penticton and Vancouver where there is enough energy from the sun to actually warm the temperature during the day.

First of all, I don't trust old readings (≈ before 1945) because weather screens were very different. They were often "opened", like this one.

Image

That doesn't mean it was not very hot or very cold, but there was probably an overestimate (1C to 2C according to weather experts).

Here are the provincial records that I consider pretty reliable (not sure obviously).
Of course, after that, we should check each station to see the location (as we did for BC, with a lot of [bad] surprises...).
Unfortunately, this is not possible for each station (a lot of them doesn't exist anymore).

Alberta:

41.7C in Empress, on Aug 5, 1961.
-60.6C in Fort Vermilion, on Jan 11, 1911 [dubious].

British Columbia:

44.4C in Lytton and Lillooet, on July 16 & 17, 1941 [likely].
-58.9C in Smith River, on Jan 31, 1947.

NB: There would be an astonishing reading of -71 near Fort Nelson in January 1982.
https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... h_Columbia

Manitoba:

44.4C in Emerson and St. Albans, on July 11 & 12, 1936 [likely].
-52.8C in Norway House, on Jan 9, 1899 [likely]; -51.7C in Brochet, on Feb 22, 1966.

New Brunswick:

39.4C in Nepisiguit Falls, Rexton and Woodstock, on Aug 18, 1935 [likely].
-44.4C in Sussex, on Jan 15, 1957 [likely].

Newfoundland & Labrador:

38.3C in North West River, on July 6, 1921 [likely].
-51.2C in Esker, on Feb 17, 1973.

Northwest Territories:

36.7C in Yohin, on July 13, 2014 [39.4C in Fort Smith on July 18, 1941 is probably unreliable].
-57.2C in Fort Smith, on Dec 26, 1917 [likely]; -56.7C in Inuvik, on Feb 4, 1968 [-59.4C in Fort Resolution in Jan 1936 is unreliable].

Nova Scotia:

38.3C in Collegeville, on Aug 19, 1935 [likely].
-41.1C in Upper Stewiacke, on Jan 31, 1920 [likely].

Nunavut:

34.9C in Kugluktuk [Coppermine], on July 15, 1989.
-57.8C in Shepherd Bay, on Feb 13, 1973.

Ontario:

42.2C in Atikokan, on July 11 & 12, 1936 and 42.2C in Fort Frances, on July 13, 1936 [likely]; Biscotasing reading is an error.
-51.7C in White River, on Jan 23, 1935 [likely].

Prince Edward Island:

36.7C in Charlottetown, on Aug 19, 1935 [likely].
-37.2C in Kilmahumaig, on Jan 26, 1884 [very old reading]; -37.0C in Bangor, on Feb 7, 1993.

Quebec:

40.0C in La Tuque, on Aug 1, 1975.
-52.0C in Riviere Kinojevis, on Jan 18, 1982.

Saskatchewan:

43.9C in Midale, on July 5, 1936 [likely]. I don't believe in the 45.0C of Midale and Yellow Grass.
-56.7C in Prince Albert, on Feb 1, 1893 [very old reading]; -55.0C in Butte St Pierre, on Jan 25, 1972.

Yukon:

36.5C in Mayo Road, on June 25, 2004.
-63.0C in Snag, on Feb 3, 1947.

Using Kamloops as a reference, 2019 is one of the rainiest years on record if you count number of rain days. Also, it was one of the driest on record if you count total precipitation. Interesting stuff.
