Re: Politics
I mean, is anyone surprised? Carney can't control Trump, but no one else can either. Trump will continue to do whatever he wants, and often for completely nonsensical reasons.stuffradio wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 3:04 pm Mark Carney today is saying we should not expect a new trade deal without permanent tariffs in place.
The only thing Carney can control is how he reacts to Trump. He must stop caving to Trump's every whim, because it's obvious that repeated attempts to appease him are only hurting Canada while getting us nothing in return.

Re: Politics
I agree. His tenure is early so we'll give him time to see if he actually does what he promised.Abby_wx wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 12:13 pm I mean, is anyone surprised? Re: Politics
Most of those are third-party managed, probably inside a mutual fund or ETF, so Carney has little control over the individual investments.
The first eight assets mentioned are self-managed, so they could be conflicts if held outside of a blind trust. Three of those holdings are related to Brookfield, which we already knew about, so that leaves five others that we didn't know about.

Yup. I'm pretty disappointed so far, but he still has time to turn things around.stuffradio wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 12:37 pm I agree. His tenure is early so we'll give him time to see if he actually does what he promised.

Re: Politics
That was my point all along. The election should never have been about Trump. Nobody is going to stop him. Now whether or not Poilievre would cave as easily to him as Carney is debatable. But regardless, the primary election focus should have been about who is going to fix Canada's internal issues rather than who is going to end the trade war. My opinion is that Carney used Trump to win him the election and unfortunately, it worked.Abby_wx wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 12:13 pm I mean, is anyone surprised? Re: Politics
If that ends up being the case, I'd expect or at the very least, hope we'll have another snap election in about a year or two.stuffradio wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 3:04 pm Mark Carney today is saying we should not expect a new trade deal without permanent tariffs in place.

Re: Politics
I am actually glad Carney is no longer promising anything by any specific date. Why? Because doing so amounted to Carney telling his adversary* his strategy in advance. That is as stupid in international politics as it is in poker.
In fact, it is why Trump was able to get Carney to cave so easily earlier. He knew he could get Carney over a barrel simply by stalling and letting an announced deadline set by Carney expire.
* And yes, that is the way to see it, because that is the way Trump sees it: trade as an adversarial relationship. He sees it as zero sum; if other nations are profiting by trading with the USA, that means perforce they must be benefiting at the USA’s expense.
