Was just looking through old weather stats. Man 96/97 was a beast. Not often talked about is that November 16/17 event that dropped 30-40, with more snow later in november. Not to mention that January 97 event, not to mention it snowed 5 cm in march that year.

I think there was some record snow out in the valley with the mid November event in 96.

That November snowfall had a massive gradient. Up to 40cm Surrey eastward while less than 10cm fell to the west in Vancouver.

The 90s had two other good winters...see '90-91 or '92-93.

96/97 was probably the best most recent winter. I'd even say better than 08/09 as the arctic air was much deeper. Colder and much higher snow depth. In fact, Abbotsford had a significantly higher snow depth in the Dec 96 event then the 08 one despite snow totals being slightly higher in 08. Just much higher snow ratios in 96 because it was so much colder.
