Isn't the precip always delayed during cold events.
Yes it was. The forecast was 10-20cm of snow followed by a significant amount of freezing rain.

Stolen from another forum: map of precipitation anomalies based on 1983-84, 1998-99, 2007-08 and 2010-11 as analogues, minus 2014-15 + 1986-87 (since the current background state is opposite both winters).

Active storm track primarily into Washington and Oregon, and into Southern BC at times. Relatively dry into the central and north coast. Looks like a signal for a suppressed jet at times, which could be good news for periods of cold and snow.

FWIW, WeatherBell's winter analogues are 2003-04, 2005-06, 2008-09, 2017-18, and 2020-21.

Mixed bag for us locally.
2005-06 and 2020-21 = bad
2003-04 and 2017-18 = decent
2008-09 = great

Some cooling in the equator, some off our coast. I would take more of that! 1971 redux?

Winter 1970-71 or 1971-72?

FWIW both were great, just wondering which one you are referring to.

The one that dwarfs all other Yvr snowfall records...Im actually not sure which one. I'm leaning towards 71/72 though.

If we're going solely by year, then it's 1971, because the snowiest month of each winter was Jan (70-71) and Dec (71-72).

One of the most significant snowstorms in recorded history across the south coast occured during Jan 1971. YVR recorded about 100cm in just over four days.

Annual snowfall for 1971 was further inflated with about 80cm in December, including a white Christmas.

100cm. That would be absolute chaos nowadays, or maybe it was back then.

A few members on here have talked about their memories of the Jan '71 snowstorm before.

Likely one of the most significant snowstorms for any major Canadian city in recorded history. Just to compare... Toronto called in the army for a similar amount of snow over 2 weeks in January 1999.

Honestly we are due for an epic cold and snowy winter. After having to endure such a hot and humid summer, we deserve it. :chilly: :snowman:
