October 2022 Forecast and Discussions

Post by stuffradio »

So far the models are quite warm for the month but this is the first realistic month we CAN get frost. Any thoughts on if we'll get frost this month?

October frost happens virtually every year.... Freeze though? Still likely but less certain than a frost.

I'm not sure. For some reason I remember there being years where we don't get a frost until November or even December, but maybe I'm actually thinking about a freeze?

Probably a freeze. Hard to remember an October where we didn't get at least a frost since that's pretty easy to see with clear skies and temps just down to 2-3c.

Agree with Tright October is sparse for a hard freeze however l do recall the great late October arctic blast of 84? it snowed Halloween 🎃 night started just after midnight so counted as Nov 1st. I was living in Richmond at the time YVR got down to l believe it was -6c on October 31st.
I recall 5cm to 10cm fell early Nov 1st, 1984

1984 was a top tier arctic blast for late October. After the modified arctic front pushed through during the day on the 30th, dropping temps from morning through evening, YVR recorded a High/low of 1.9c/-5.9c on Oct 31st. Late that night into November 1st we had a moderate region wide (across the lower mainland) snowfall, with amounts generally ranging from 2cm to 15cm. The island got hit hard, with some locales across the east and central regions getting over 20-30cm.

Another top tier late October arctic blast was 1991, when YVR recorded a high/low of 3.0c/-3.5c on the 28th with 2cm of snow, followed by a low of -4.7c on the 29th.

During the 1970s, prior to both events, the only late October "arctic blast" that belongs in the same company is 1971, with YVR recording a low of -3.3c on the 28th, followed by a high of only 4.1c on the 29th, and also recording 0.6cm of snow on that day into the 30th. Raw days with slush mixed in with the rain showers.

l remember that 1991 event well l was living up on Austin Heights Tbones, interesting l fondly remember areas south of the fraser river recieved more snow than area's north. My parents got at least 5cm in Richmond while where l was in upper Coquitlam it was mabe 1cm-2cm the rest of that winter was a complete dud l remember.
1971 l was in grade 6 living at 49th and Fraser l do recall the end of October being frosty indeed, l don't recall any slush falls but l do recall a raw November followed by that outstanding winter.

I was in Fraser Heights and I recall maybe half a cm, but I know it was more for areas south.

Welcome to October! The CFS monthly for November is wet and temps have no signal for warmth or cold for SW BC.
