What do you expect to get paid for a hobby? You sit at a desk, don’t really create or build. It is like being paid to guess the price of gas at the pumps in 3 months. The only job where if you keep fooling a person you get the title as weatherman. The cleaning lady has to work harder.

This is perhaps the most wilfully ignorant and bitter comment, that I have come across! Shame on you!

EC has just been gutted and it looks even worse when you realize the population has grown along with density in many communities. Food for thought... Meteorologists get horribly underpaid for what they do, with some now making as low as 65k per year. This is why I shifted careers to surveying and forestry years ago and left the field of climatology. There is just no worth to it.

7 years of post secondary studies for a job that has many requirements and requires non stop focus and attention to detail. It's not just reviewing global models like we do here.

You need at least a Masters degree, I believe. It's a deep and intricate knowledge of atmospheric physics and fluid dynamics amongst other things. And think of all the public services and private businesses which rely on weather predictions to make calls on when to do what. It's actually a very key aspect of the smooth functioning of millions of things each day in this country alone.

Schooling doesn’t validate pay. Are you saying a cleaning lady doesn’t work harder? Unfortunately demand and economy determine pay. That’s why people with degrees are sometimes lucky to get $65k a year. I like weather guys but at the same time, they are about as accurate as a computer model anyways. I think that’s why they have been canned, job replaced by computers. It’s not a popular thing, just like home care workers getting $45k per year.
