Re: August 2023 Forecasts and Discussions
I have seen this in the Similkameens lots. Im ATVing middle of nowhere and an abandoned campsite with a fire still going...bone dry ground..no fire ban yet though like in June..windy area..50 feet away lies a lake. . Just stupidwetcoast91 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 7:43 am Local campsites get super busy due to increasing demand and the common advise is to go "far into the woods" which can be a 20+ hour hike.
Sadly this has led to huge debris fields of trash. I have seen speaker systems, destroyed bikes, coolers, and tons of garbage. The worst thing is seeing the makeshift firepits that were either left smouldering or not doused with water or sand.
There is no real way to enforce a full fire ban when an increasing number of campers are going into places with zero enforcement.
Nobody around to see if it flares up until its too late.
I've also seen the campers dump garbage...piles of everything. Someone brought up a ~55"TV and dumped it. Nice. There are Losers everywhere Nito.
Looking forward to our first 3 day stretch of sun and 20c++

100% make them payRubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 7:47 am Yes, there is really a shortage of campsites near the metro area. If you don’t plan your trip months in advance, forget it. I almost always end up doing dispersed camping. A bonus is that it’s nice to have no nearby neighbours (and it’s free).
Make those whose unlawful fires turn into wildfires pay the cost of fighting them, even if it drives them into bankruptcy, and publicize it.

Re: August 2023 Forecasts and Discussions
I disagree with this. I ATV lots. They do not start fires. Fake NewsPortKells wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:12 am Off roading vehicles like ATVs and dirtbikes may be a big contributor with the sparks they produce.
Either way the fire conditions are what is important, if things were more moist then these fires wouldn't get out of hand so fast. I mean that fire barely started 24 hours ago.

Here's a sight you don't see ever: Friday afternoon in summer on the William R. Bennett Bridge with nary a vehicle.

Re: August 2023 Forecasts and Discussions
I disagree even more with you. I just quickly googled it and atvs can and have caused fires like any other motor vehicle. Except more because they are out in the bush, and lots of people go nuts. Lots of riders remove their spark arrestors. No need to be defensive I’m sure you operate yours safely and it’s the bad apples you need to worry about.

Go get n95s now if you have any issue or even if you don’t. It’s bad for you.Weather101 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 3:17 pm Man... I'm going to have a hard time breathing if the smoke really is that bad...

Damn, a lifelong family friend has been evacuated. He and my dad were just lamenting all of the beautiful hiking trails they use that burnt up, now he might lose his house. Sucks to have come to this.

I remember the ash in August 2021. That was eerie.

Re: August 2023 Forecasts and Discussions
Looks like the smoke gets pulled out over the Pacific by a cut off low. So, even when the westerlies break through, it could be a while before the smoke clears out over the Lower Mainland.

Re: August 2023 Forecasts and Discussions
And the province has declared a state of emergency welp that caps off the summer l mentioned tongue in cheek back in spring all these would happen.
Drought, water shortage heat humps , camp fire bans, water restrictions, major wildfires, provincial state of emergency wish it was a joke this is absolutely horrible and devastating. I reached a high of 25c @ the pond in south Sardis today.
