Rainfall Warning in effect

Rain, at times heavy, is expected.

Where: Metro Vancouver and Squamish.

When: Christmas midday to Boxing Day.

Hazard:
- Local water pooling on the roads
- Travel disruptions
- Possible power outages

Total rainfall accumulations: 50 to 80 mm. For North Shore, northern Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, 100 mm or more is possible.

Remarks: A couple of weather systems are expected to arrive on Christmas and Boxing Day.

During the afternoon of Christmas Day, the weather system will bring heavy rain to Metro Vancouver and Squamish. Over higher terrain above 300 metres elevation, a brief period of wet snow may give slippery conditions.

Rain will continue through Boxing Day as another low pressure system moves close to the South Coast.

Rain will ease to a few possible showers in the afternoon of Boxing Day.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Rain, heavy at times is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.

What:
Rainfall amounts approaching 50 mm.

When:
Today and tonight.

Where:
Northern sections of Metro Vancouver and the western Fraser Valley

Additional information:
A low pressure system approaching Metro Vancouver will bring rain today. The rain will taper off late this evening.

Up to 50 mm of rain is forecast, and when combined with areas of frozen or partially frozen ground, runoff may cause localised flooding and water pooling on roads.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Be prepared for winter conditions at higher elevations.

Don't approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected.

Where: Metro Vancouver.

When: Tonight through Monday morning.

Remarks: A wintry mix of weather conditions is expected to impact the South Coast of B.C. through Monday morning. A period of heavy snowfall is expected tonight and Sunday morning. Accumulations will vary widely across the region, ranging from 10 to 20 cm. The highest amounts will likely occur over higher terrain, but other areas may see locally intense flurries giving reduced visibility and heavy snow accumulation. Precipitation will taper off to wet flurries or showers Sunday afternoon. Another round of heavy snow may develop Sunday night into Monday morning.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
