One thing I forgot to mention is how different this scenario is going into this cold period. Normally you enter from a warm/cool rainy period, this time is very different. Almost all of January was dry and chilly, especially at night. So it's almost like a mini cool period has been around for a few weeks. I'm very interested to see if this affects the normal dynamics we see, or if it will be largely unaffected. I saw some pics on social media of frozen portions of farm fields in low lying areas. Also unusual without an actual arctic front. My curiosity is really excited to see the potential behavior of the weather over the next several days!
Thank you for all your posts WPro! I agree..lots of low level, established cold already in place and the wet bulb factor. Exciting days ahead but i think some local snowzone areas we will be getting hammmmerd with snow over the next several days

Snow depth maps would be more accurate to show what actually is on the ground. A lot of these totals maps will have mixing in between and sublimation or impaction and are not reflective of what actually accumulates.
To some degree but the kuchera maps are pretty good. They try to account for different snow ratios. But the snow depth maps are a good indicator of how much snow will be on the ground when factoring in compacting and or melting during the day. So they serve an important purpose.
