There's an area in Maple Ridge called Whonnock. There's a Whonnock Facebook group and the people are responding to this by wondering if they should start to organize themselves in response to this and try and have a local farmers market at Whonnock Lake. Just something to help themselves become more self-sufficient and local.

Trudeau killed it. He has his flaws but he's been PM in some of the most tumultuous times this country has seen. A nice send off that speech. Hopefully Mark Carney can follow in his footsteps and prevent a disaster.

Very good speech until he got to the question period. Guy can't answer a question to save his life, but that's a typical politician for you.

So today American liquor was pulled from shelves, and now Canada wants to do a bunch of other stupid stuff, all because they didn't want to strengthen the border. Canada is led by complete asshats. We all know the border is an issue and weak ass Canada does nothing to stop anything coming from any direction. But no.. let's fight the USA.

I don't think this is really about illegal migrants or fentanyl -- that's just how Trump is selling it to his base. Ironically, the tariffs will harm many of the people who voted for him -- not that he cares.

Trump is a businessman, so his real motivations are economic, which is where the 51st state rhetoric is coming from. He views the border as an impediment to business and an unnecessary expense. He has criticized Canada many times in the past for being protectionist over certain industries. He incorrectly suggested that US banks aren't allowed to operate in Canada -- they are, but they must follow our rules, which is enough to deter many of them. He would like unlimited access to our markets, so the best way to achieve that is to assimilate us.

He also wants access to Canada's resources, especially oil, which is why he only suggested a 10% tariff on oil. He won't admit it, but the US relies our energy, including natural gas and electricity. He would love to be in complete control of those things.

BTW, I am concerned about the border, but mainly because most of the illegal migration and guns are coming north into Canada - not south to the USA. So what's the US going to do to stop illegal guns coming into Canada? Right, nothing.

Great spot on thoughts Abby Sr. I'm not versed as well as alot of experts in here but l know enough to see what's going on here. Great to see normally subdued Canadians standing up for our selves say what you say about Trudumb at least he didn't back down.

Of course Trump wants us to secure the border, because someone needs to spend the money and it might as well be us. And then he can say to his supporters, "Look what I did, I stood up to Canada and I got our fentanyl problem under control." (even though Mexico was a far greater source of fentanyl).

Since the whole fentanyl thing is mainly just a distraction, now watch him spend the next 30 days trying to wring out trade concessions from us, and possibly even trying to renegotiate CUSMA early. The tariffs may or may not still go ahead, depending on how much he can extract from Trudeau. I have no idea what the Liberals are willing to put on the table, and whether it would be enough to satisfy Trump. We can't just keeping giving and getting nothing in return, so there needs to be some reciprocity, IMO.

The stuff about Gaza is absolutely chilling. We're about to see a serious genocide over there. His stance on Iran is just as dangerous, that country has basically been contained for a long time now with tough deplomacy.

Creating more and more extremists and terrorists.

On Canada, he's possibly full of crap. I don't think he's doing the tariffs. He just wanted a symbolic win. But it could still happen. We need to pivot from reliance on them immediately and I think that's happening.

Mark Carney seems to me like the right choice for this moment. He is not like Trudeau at all, he is economically literate and not focused on the social stuff everyone's tired of. Polievre is just whining that Trudeau is out, that seems to be all he had other than "axe the tax". We don't need division right now, we need unity.

Counterpoint: economic literacy can go flying out the window once someone becomes a politician. I'd like to see him propose a spending bill before I make up my mind on whether I can even contemplate forgiving the Liberals for a lost decade.

It's a fair point. He's never been elected. My fear is Pierre is trying to become Trump north and Carney is the best option to stopping that. Carney is still somewhat unproven/unknown so hopefully he can actually give us something here.

You can't deny though he's throwing Trudeau-ism under the bus and promising a shift in direction for the party.
