The early January 1982 arctic blast was absolutely insane from a 500mb pattern perspective. What stands out to me is the lack of GOA blocking.

The cold maxed out at -8.1C (high) and -18.6C (low) on January 5th, at YXX (Abbotsford airport.) That was a very cold polar low! :silent:

Very underrated cold snap. One of the best of the 20th century, IMO. The late December 1981 through mid January 1982 period was great, first starting with plenty of wet snow, descending into some pretty extreme cold, and with snowcover throughout.

Broad Aleutian/NPAC blocks can lead to Arctic blasts impacting South Coast, despite a 500mb pattern that may not "look" very favourable, especially when you're only looking for a block over Alaska. High risk/high reward type of setup. Unfortunately, those types of setups don't occur as frequently or don't lead to many favourable results for us nowadays as they once did in the past.

Dirty ridging for the foreseeable future. Looks damp and seasonal with periods of drizzle, mild advection rain and fog.

Putrid boring weather but I suspect we go into a stormy pattern come mid December.

Some snow today and Wednesday up there but it mostly washes away Thursday before it dries out. Looks like another dismal start for the local ski hills is on tap.
I'm sure you copy and paste the same comment every year. ( And some years you are correct :D ) Was nice to get a brief glimpse of the local mtns this morning with fresh snow. Worked in the snowboarding industry for many years and know the great thing about the local mountains is they can go from bare to open in a few days. Good that Wetcoast is around to focus everyone on the fact we live in an area that climo usually wins.

So funny to see what we have and will have for late November versus what was forecasted a few days ago...

Expect nothing. Hope for the best. Have nothing interesting.
