Extreme cold around here is a 6 week window..otherwise im sure most of us would take the snow. Besides, extreme cold makes my hands crack..generational genetic flaw
Extreme cold has occurred in Feb before. If the criteria for extreme cold is a high/low below -4c/-10c in Vancouver, we get this list...

Feb 3, 1899 -4.4c/-11.1c
Feb 4, 1899 -5.6c/-10.0c
Feb 13, 1923 -7.2c/-12.2c
Feb 9, 1933 -4.4c/-11.7c
Feb 7, 1936 -4.4c/-13.3c
Feb 1, 1950 -5.0c/-16.1c
Feb 15, 1956 -5.0c/-13.3c
Feb 2, 1989 -7.0c/-11.2c

The whole point of cold is for the snow imo, so definitely extreme snow.

Extreme cold and snow go hand in hand in our region though. Without major cold, it's extremely rare to score extreme snow.

I'm struggling to think of any regionwide extreme snowfalls (30-40+cm in one day or 50-60+cm in two/three days) without extreme cold already in place, or pushing into the region.

I'd love both to happen but I'd go for extreme cold with a nominal amount (10-20 cm) of snow, if I had to choose between extreme cold or extreme snowfall.

My minimum criteria for extreme cold in early February would be: -8C / -13C (high/low)
It always snows in December in the Kootenays

It's unfortunate data does not exist for February 1893 for Vancouver, because there would definitely have been a couple days with highs below -10c.

As it stands though, a high below -7.2c in February has never been observed at either YVR or Vancouver City Hall, with records back to 1898. In fact, all time, there have only been 16 days with highs below -8c at either YVR or City Hall.

If you look in the stats thread, I posted a list of the coldest highs in Vancouver...there have been 30 days in recorded history with highs under -7c so I'd say that should be the cutoff for an extreme tmax for the city.

I'll post a similar list showing the coldest lows soon, but I think anything below -13c is fine in qualifying as an extreme low.

Heard on Global there's a big windstorm coming... don't see any warnings issued though. Any updates? I haven't been following things too closely lately, but I see everyone is still talking about the clown range... lol.

Edit: forecast only says windy... pressure doesn't seem very low, so I guess it's all hype?

I don't see well defined low on the satellite either.

HRRR suggests wind gusts in the 60-70 km/h range beginning around 10 PM for Abbotsford.

The forecast windstorm was mainly for exposed coastal regions.

Here is part 2 and 3. The cutoff is -12.5c. Our warming climate is pretty evident when you look at this list.
