Ice on everything + little gusts of wind = disaster. Entire power grids are knocked out and widespread tree loss.

Yeah. I will pay money for that. I am sure Nito will appreciate it too.

Far more damage to infrastructure with ice storms.

Not to mention treacherous road conditions. Especially for those that have to work. No thanks.

But windstorms are fine? Nothing better than natural disaster and chaos.

Would be insane but I highly doubt it verifies.

Ice storms are pretty rare over here. I can’t even remember an event with 10mm of accretion

Yeah most of the Fraser Valley lost power during the December 2017 ice storm.

Imagine if that storm had impacted Metro Vancouver as well. Would have been far more damage to the power grid than the August 2015 windstorm.

Doubt it. Ice storms right out to the coast? Lol. Maybe 1/2 hour slush/ice festival then the cold rains begin, as usual.
Looking forward to our first 3 day stretch of sun and 20c++ 8-)

Yeah, ice storms in Metro Vancouver are very rare. Before Dec 1996, I think the last major one was in Jan 1979?

They are relatively common once you get east of Langley/Maple Ridge, as our valley members can attest...December 2017 being the most recent example, February 2017 and January 2017 before that.

So, what do we know after the 18z? I think the short term is a lock. It will get colder. How much so? Who knows. It looks dry for now, but those details will sort themselves out. After that? The Euro sends a piece of the trough into Alaska, 12z GFS digs it SW and the 18z into the Gulf of Alaska. Those details will have huge implications on how long it stays cold for. Model riding continues....

I remember the ice storm from a few years ago...
There was an entire grove of trees on the north side of Hwy #1 just west of the Abbotsford Auto Mall that was obliterated by it.
Was very fascinating to see!

My location tends to be shadowed from ice storm. Hardly any ice at my place during the February and December 2017 ice storm. Yet everything was a sheet of ice just up the street from me. Power was out in most areas surrounding me. Worst power problems we had was flickering lights. It was a very strange microclimate. I'm not really sure why other than the possibility that I was shadowed from the outflow.

Per the 18z GFS, temps mostly remain below freezing across the lower mainland from Sunday evening (Feb 7th) through Saturday morning (Feb 13th).

Lowest temps are on Wednesday morning. Looks like -8c YVR, -12C Surrey/Coquitlam, -16c YXX.

Ice storms do make everything look cool. But they cause a lot of damage.
