The fen is so shallow as well, in the summer it mostly dries up. Canal skating in the Netherlands is happening this week. On a side note it takes guts and skill to parallel park there.

People were already skating on the ponds and small local lakes by the second week of December '16 here. Just after Christmas the larger lakes became skateable until the warmup in mid/late Jan.
