Not to toot my own horn but I called this. The records are impressive but the human toll is enormous and not even close to worth it. And this isn't the last of it, it's just the beginning. We've passed into a climate that is capable of mass casualty heat events and it will only become clearer as time marches on.

Then again...there is a section of society that doesn't value elders ( other than their own) as proven by the resistance to any and all covid restrictions, vaccines and the like. So this mass casualty event will be swept under the rug as these lives held little value to those people.

If these poor people who died were children, you'd be seeing a massive uproar right now. That day might not be too far off, but for now I guess we can comfort ourselves that were not old enough to get fried alive.

I'm pretty bitter about all of this. Maybe time to just realize that no amount of bitter will change the hard reality that this is our new normal and it is what it is. Get tough or get out. Darwinism in its least ethical and moral sense.

It's absolutely disgraceful. This government only pays lip service to health care workers, in real terms it cares no more than the previous one.

The heatwave in 1936 had a higher death toll in Canada. The weather throughout the 30's (late 20's - early 40's) was another animal. People would be beside themselves if that was repeated. I think we need to some context despite the historic heat.

There were also those of us also concerned about the potential death toll. I helped a friend with an A/C as recently as last Wednesday as it wasn't well known to this person how historic this was going to be. I mentioned here last week when EC issued the heat warning that meteorologists and the media have cried wolf so many times, we're numb to it. Even a nominal deviation from average is slapped with a warning or a SWS with media throwing around hyperbole. Such warnings should only be issued when there's an imminent threat to life and the potential for a profound disruption in life. Even hanging on to the heat warning on the coast after the dangerous weather has passed is a misuse of these warnings and waters down the danger of a real emergency. I.e. The inconvenience of 30cm of snow is just that... an inconvenience. That should merely be a travel advisory, not a "snowfall warning" or "winter storm warning." When the media and EC and others are throwing "emergency" around ad nauseam, the public is numb to the dangers of an acute a real imminent emergency.

Based on the models...gradients go offshore this weekend. July 2nd to 5th look really bad in terms of smoke for our area. Forget using the modeling from firesmoke because I anticipate these fires to increase in size and numbers.

It will be really bad for the E Valley.

Got a friend stationed near 100 Mile house. He and along with a few others are getting out asap. The trees were said to have the appearance of "sun burn."

There have been a lot of travellers STILL going into the interior for the long weekend. Just insane levels of stupidity.

Word from a FB group is that the entire town is expected to burn down.

Just gut wrenching. I used to love working out of there.
