Apparently 16 people died from heat realted deaths from our heatwave a few weeks ago..

Yes it does. Tell your friend that i would say, like 50-80 days a year it snows there..thats my guess

Looks like the Lytton area had some heavy rain yesterday which I imagine was good for the forest fire there however it was bad for the area hit by last years forest fire and there was a mudslide and the highway is closed.

I think this is the case for a lot of people. They don't mind summer temps but the problem here is there is no cooling in most homes, so there is no relief and no way to regenerate and feel better, thus people get cranky and generally tired. Some people can't take the heat for medical or health reasons. I was at my friends condo in Coquitlam, and the building is 2 years old roughly. The temp inside the condo has spiked to 28 to 35 inside all day and all night. It's dreadful! No escape, and impossible to sleep. Even with a fan blowing in cool air from the balcony. Not only are these condos complete CRAP quality in every way. They trap the heat like an oven. It really should be MANDATORY EVERY new home/condo whatever be built with an AC system that can be used if needed.

All new condos/townhomes/homes should have heat pumps and the building codes should be changed so that all new homes are ultra efficient, like passive homes. Heat pumps are more efficient and can provide heating and cooling and if you have a very efficient home you can scale down the size of the heat pump system to be even just 10% of what you would need on a regular home.

They also need to be designed better. They build basically the same stuff here they build everywhere, but delete the a/c that is standard in continental climates. It used to be that buildings were designed to ventilate and dump interior heat in the summer. Now they assume that people will simply use a/c when it gets hot so they don’t bother to make those considerations.

No real reason they can’t return to designing for ventilation. People would still use a/c but it would lessen the demand for it.

Definitely get that but personally never felt the need to invest in any kind of A/C system because it's not ever been warranted, imo. This is despite the fact indoor temps every day and night during summer regularly hover in a range between roughly 24c and 32c -- depending on room, time of day and outside temps -- if we have average to slightly above average outdoor temps (i.e. 25c to 30c).

With that said, since most buildings in mostly cool/cold climates like ours are built to retain heat rather than letting it all out like in other climates, I do think cooling systems like central A/C should be required indoors in places with vulnerable people like old folks homes, for example.

Otherwise our climate simply does not warrant them (central cooling systems) being mandatory indoors everywhere, though implementing some sort of code that includes proper ventilation should be top of mind. Also this most certainly should not prevent homeowners/renters/etc from purchasing A/C units.
