I'm guessing this will eventually flip into something good for us down the line. Hopefully #endofDec or #begofJan

Agassiz recorded a high of -16.7c on January 30th, 1893 and -19.4c on February 2nd, 1893.

Jan 1909 was basically just as cold as well. The 7th/8th/9th had highs of -18.9c, -20.6c and -18.9c in Agassiz
Ya, I had forgotten about 1893 (was thinking of extreme daily lows), and it is the in the running for the coldest on record. It was by far the two coldest nights on record at Agassiz (-23.3 and -24.4). 1909 was crazy too, although it seems that Agassiz was a bit of an anomaly. Still between 1893 and 1909, that accounts for 6 of the 7 nights on record which hit -20C. The only other day being Dec 28, 1968.

It's interesting how the LOW and the HIGH were both -20.6C on Jan 8, 1909! And it snowed 12cm! On the coldest day ever recorded at Agassiz! Only 10 km away to the west there was just a trace amount of snow, and much warmer temperatures (high of -14.4C).

In the interior, the 1893 and 1909 nights were cold, but nothing compared to 1950 and 1968/69. The daytime temperatures were just as extreme, however. For Kamloops, Jan 30, 1893 and Dec 30, 1968 are tied for the coldest low on record (-28.9C). Dec 29. 1968 is the next coldest at -27.8C followed by Jan 10, 1909 at -27.2C. Jan 1911 and Jan 1950 were also very cold with highs of -26.7C.

Since records began in Penticton in 1907 there have been just 5 days at or below -20C (2 in 1909, 1 in 1964, and 2 in 1968), the coldest being -22.2C on Dec 29, 1968.

Looks like Agassiz dropped to -20c on Jan 21, 1943 as well. That was another all time great arctic blast.

Across the south coast, temps plunged below freezing on the 16th, followed a snowstorm on the 18/19/20th (50-75cm fell in the valley) while temps remained well below freezing. Another reinforcing shot of arctic air followed in the coming days, with a high of -10c at YVR on the 21st and a low of -16.1c on the 22nd.

Other extremes across the south coast during Jan 1943 included a high/low of -13.3c/-18.3c in Abbotsford, -13.9c/-20.0c in Agassiz and -17.8c/-20.6c in Hope.

Extremes in the interior included high/lows of -23.9c/-32.8c in Kamloops, -19.4c/-23.3c in Penticton and -28.9c/-42.8c in Williams Lake.

Totally different animal in northern BC. Atlin has records going back to the 1800s, and by FAR the coldest lows were set in December 1917. Same goes for the Yukon where this was by far the coldest month on record. Anyway, Top 5 coldest days on record in Atlin:
Dec 25, 1917 = -45.6C
Dec 26, 1917 = -44.4C (coldest night on record at -50C)
Jan 19, 1996 = -42.0C
Dec 27, 1917 = -41.7C
Dec 24, 1917 = -41.1C

BTW, of the 10 days that never climbed above -40C, 4 were in 1917, 5 were in 1996, and 1 in 1925.

Further south in Barkerville with weather records back to 1880, the coldest night was Feb 3, 1893 at -36.1C. The morning was -43.3C, the 2nd coldest on record. The coldest was Jan 31, 1947 when the morning low was -46.7C (and the afternoon was -31.6C).

For Quesnel, the coldest day was Jan 1, 1928 at -34.4C. The coldest night on record was the day before on Dec 31, 1927 with a low of -46.7C.

Further south in Kaslo (with records back to the 1800s), the coldest days on record were both in 1968, -21.7 and -21.1. The next coldest was Dec 1914 at -18.9C. The only -30 on record was Dec 31, 1968 at -31.1C.

Quatsino has records back to 1895, and their coldest day on record was Jan 20, 1943 at -11.1C, followed by -8.3C set in 1968 and 1909. 4th is November 26th, 1985! The 11 coldest nights on record were all set in Jan 1950!

Bella Coola has records back to 1898, and the coldest days were in Jan 1911 at -24.4 and -23.3. Next was -21.1 on two days in Dec 1917. The coldest night on record was Jan 15, 1950 at -28.9C.

Fort St. James has records back to 1895. The coldest day was Jan 1, 1928 at -38.3C, followed by Dec 30, 1917 at -35.6C and Jan 6, 1991 at -35C.
The coldest nights on record were both -49.4C, set in Feb 1907 and Jan 1928.

Victoria (Gonzales Hill) has records back to 1898. The coldest days on record were Dec 29, 1968 at -11.7, Jan 13, 1950 at -11.1, Jan 7, 1909 at -11.1, and Dec 28, 1968 at -10.6C. The three coldest nights on record set in Dec 1968.

Keremeos has records back to 1891. The 4 coldest days on record were set in Jan/Feb 1893, with the coldest being -24.4C. The only -30C nights on record were set in 1893, 1950, and 1968.

Keep chins up, longer range forecasts can change overnight, and with the la nina and “ No blob” bias it wont take much for a Arctic blast to sneak in. This weather has been just seasonal so far
