Weird mini temperature spike between 4:00 and 5:30 at KBLI. Temperature went from 24 to 26. Didn’t expect that. Probably some mixing from aloft.
It's called clown range for a reason.

We already have smoke in our mid layers.

Smoke could reach the lower tropo in the LM by the weekend.

If this province were wise then they would issue a travel ban and close up all the parks this long weekend. Sadly I see a lot of stupid people starting fires.
You're on a roll, keep telling it like it is. There should have EASILY been a state of emergency declared before this past weekend and there should be steps taken to get people the eff out of the forests that will easily ignite into massive infernos and choke us out until it truly rains, which for all we know is in late September.

But what actually happens? Business as usual. As a result, dozens and possibly hundreds of lives unnecessarily lost thanks to the hubris of our government, media, populace, etc. The "It'll never get that hot here" schtick was dangerous thinking and it proved to be disastrous. Now what is it, "Oh the fire season won't be bad, we've already burned all the forests" or "oh, the small towns can't afford to lose tourism" which they will anyway when the smoke is too terrible.

Yes, as were the yellow dots in Kansas.

I read somewhere that anomaly wise, this heatwave has toppled that one as the strongest in recorded history in North America. Just unbelievable.

Sounds like the initial COVID response. I think we can safely say that governments don't care about people. If they did.. then the climate emergency would take hold and we would be drastically making changes tomorrow to curb the effects and start planning on adaptation strategies.

People are also stupid when they refuse to acknowledge basic science.

Here's the general picture as of now on the GFS. Looking like dry but close to average in the long range, subject to change as we get closer. It just doesn't have the troughiness we are going to need. But it also doesn't put us back in the blast furnace which is nice.

I had a weird mini temperature spike too. Down to 27C and back up to 29C briefly. Now back to 28C. My high for the day was 33C.

And another spike later… my high for the day of 26°C actually occurred between 6 and 7 pm!

High of 33.5c here in east Coquitlam. Usually that would feel pretty warm but just felt like a normal summer day after this heatwave.

Still relatively hot inside the house at 32.0c right now but outside temps have cooled to 29.1c with a nice breeze.

That one was a beast on another level too... heat was just centred further east over the plains/prairies and western great lakes rather than the PNW and western prairies.

For example, Fargo, North Dakota has an average July high of 27.8c (based on the 1981-2010 climate normals) and hit an incredible 46c in July 1936.

After reports of nearly 100 people dying over the last 3 days, they damn well better! But as usual. To little too late.

I can already smell light smoke.. so I think you are right, but perhaps it's happening earlier.

So a couple things we learned today.
EC needs to remove the Richmond airport as the official temperature for Vancouver IMMEDIATELY!
I blame the 135 deaths on THEM because all the media was reporting temps for Vancouver as the Richmond location which was 10 to 15c LOWER than most places. A new official temp reading site should be put into service up on the hill like Granvile and 42nd or somewhere along that elevation.

Burnaby needs an official station, so does Sardis.

The typical viewpoint of lazy Vancouverites were "It will never get that hot" well, this falls on EC again and the media for sensationalizing every event or over hyping it so that it always comes out incorrect. This has caused people to become complacent.

Someone mentioned banning certain things due to the heat etc. I say YES as there are already people on other news sites basically saying they will ignore the ban and still use fire because they need to cook with it, and that is their 'right'. (Personally I'd hang all those people from a pole and let intelligent people throw darts at them.) Same people who refuse to wear a mask no doubt because it infringes on 'their' rights.

The mountains are very hazy. Smoke show in and out depending on winds, from now going forward until we see some rain. And that's going to be weeks as we are locked in to a mid-summer high pattern already. I think July is going to be bone dry. I just hope that since everything is sort of 2 -4 weeks ahead of schedule, so to speak, that we get some decent rains by mid to late August like in 2004, 2008 and 2015. In 2015 there were two solid rainfalls one in late July (a one day deluge) and another over a few days in late August. Without those 2 big rainfalls who knows how bad the fire situation and the water situation could have been.
