Roberts Creeker wrote: Mon Feb 27, 2023 4:03 pm That's a good idea. I was just wondering if that's an acceptable measurement because snow would be melting on a snow board but it has fallen so???

Still falling here but tiny flakes and much lighter.
Well consider my measurements to be anecdotal but accurate. However we live in a very transitional area - I'm not kidding to say that during super marginal events the snow line can be literally the street in front of our house. That being said, I take measurements in the front and backyard from the same two locations that are somewhat protected from wind, but far enough away from other things to avoid snow falling off of structures and trees. It sounds a little crazy maybe, but on the other side of our 20-foot hedge, by the road that is exposed to a lot of sunlight, there's a very noticeable difference in depth at times.

The snow has lightened for now and the temperature remains about half a degree above freezing so the cars aren't even maintaining everything that is fresh fallen at the moment.

Plenty of transitional areas/snow lines in our region. I'd assume you're fairly well-acquainted with the one in South Vancouver. Seen it first-hand and heard about it plenty of times in the past -- rain/mixed precip down by Marine, changing to snow heading up the hill past 56th and a full whiteout by the time you hit 49th. Not out that way much these days but it's a classic during marginal setups.

Seen that many times, I grew up down by 58th near Langara park. It was so frustrating at times.

Mixing with rain at YVR. Very light and slushy here, seems like it’s about to mix.
It's called clown range for a reason.

Used to have some family who lived close to the bottom of the hill (south of Moberly Park) and others who were closer to the top (near Ross/49th). Many times was a stark difference in snow depth between both locations.

Got back home to an insistent snizzle. Everything paved was bare of course but there was still some of the afternoon's snow left. Fresh snow was evident on some of our pine tree fence and in the footprints in deeper snow.

I think a fair estimate of the afternoon's snow is 2 cm.
2025-26 season stats:
Climo :cancel: ∞ to 0.5 :14clown: GFS

Season total: 0.5 cm and TWO traces!
Peak depth: 0.5 cm (01/07/2026)

Typeing3 wrote: Mon Feb 27, 2023 4:13 pm I think Rubus' measurements are acceptable, as it seems as though EC does this too. Check out February 22nd-24th, 2014 observations at YVR: https://climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_d ... 14&Month=2#

Records indicate 23.4cm fell at YVR during this three-day period, yet depth never was over 1cm due to an insane amount of melt and compaction.

Was one of the most extreme variation snow events I've ever witnessed around here. Snow depth as some places close to the water and/or near sea level never rose much above 5-10cm and barely even stuck to the pavement but at some inland locales and/or at higher elevations, depth was well over 30cm.

Upper westwood plateau picked up around 50-60cm during that event and many roads were completely impassable. In contrast, down the hill at the neighbourhoods near Coquitlam Centre and in my area of east Coquitlam, depth never topped ~15cm and the roads remained wet for the most part.
