Question: how come there is no lake-effect snow on our side when it across the strait? It is supposed to pick up moisture when the cold air passes over the warm water of the strait, right?

Re: December 2022 Forecasts And Discussions
I think in our part of the world, the cold air blows across the strait from the Fraser Valley to Nanaimo. Coming this way it's usually warm air which also downslopes off VI.Pumpkin Seed wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 12:33 pm Question: how come there is no lake-effect snow on our side when it across the strait? Re: December 2022 Forecasts And Discussions
You could get a strong NW wind aiding moisture transport and generating strong cells for YVR and Delta, however, a NW wind here usuaully comes with a strong parcel of high pressure behind, bringing drier air and stablizing the atmosphere.VanCitySouth wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 12:35 pm I think in our part of the world, the cold air blows across the strait from the Fraser Valley to Nanaimo. It will get milder tonight and change to drizzle.
Should feel very warm tomorrow with maybe a +7C reading.

Re: December 2022 Forecasts And Discussions
I think something like that did happen about a year ago. The night that Vancouver got around 20 cm, there was a band of snow marching down the Strait from NW to SE, plowing ashore over the city. Just doesn’t happen as often as sea effect snow hitting the east coast of the Island, that’s all.Pumpkin Seed wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 12:33 pm Question: how come there is no lake-effect snow on our side when it across the strait? Still just light stuff. Was expecting those green echoes on the EC radar to produce heavier stuff (typically they do). Perhaps it’s in high-sensitivity mode?

Iunno YVR is reporting visibility down to 2 km so maybe it just takes a few minutes to reach the surface/move north?Rubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 12:53 pm Still just light stuff. Was down at Lougheed TC and snow was light. Came back home and definitely picked up at the lights mid way up. Accumulating has begun.
Burnaby Mountain @ 365 m..
Stats? Fresh out of those. But I win anyway. I got all the inches.

Re: December 2022 Forecasts And Discussions
The snow has intensified and the flakes are getting bigger but not accumulating. The temperature is rising, 0.5c currently. Not a good sign at all as i believe it will turn to cold rain soon.
