I am nervous about waking up tomorrow to hear the latest on the fires. Hoping nobody is injured or killed. That fire is unreal. :(

I had a trip planned there on Saturday, clearly not happening.
Way too early to tell if this is worse than '03.
Okanagan Mtn Park Fire: hectares burnt: ~26k; homes destroyed 239; people evacuated ~27k.
The number of people evacuated was about 1/4 of the population of the city.

As a kid I remember clearing the forest floor when landscaping and raking multiple layers of pine needles. In those days you were allowed open burning in your yard in certain months. Those pine needles are a good as gasoline, so it was fun to burn piles of those needles. In Kelowna's history, they've been good at stamping out interface fires. In retrospect, the fires there that got away on them were in forest in need of rejuvenation (lots of fuel) and areas prone to strong winds: Mt Boucherie in May '92; Okanagan Mtn Park '03; Goat's Peak July '09. There have been a handful of spot fires from lightning since in Okanagan Mtn Park where it burned in '03. Those fires were not a threat as there was little fuel. And I remember some lightning-caused fires were tamped out quickly in Okanagan Mtn Park area prior to '03. It's a tragic inevitability with that much fuel, wind, and craggy terrain.

It's 13C this morning. The wildfires are crazy. I have relatives in Kelowna and Vernon and my sister's husband has family near Keefers where there is a big wildfire there too. One of my cousins lives in Keremeos

No lightning stikes were detected in BC on Thursday
