Super smoky here - the air quality is very bad in the central valley. YXX was at 28.1C at 8am already.

Yup and the smoke isn't effecting the temperature. It's 28.1C at YXX as of 8AM. Hot, humid, and horrible air quality.

Re: August 2021 Forecasts And Discussions
Unfortunately the smoke will do little to mitigate warming but will actually trap heat during the evenings. The next 72 hours are going to feel gross. Crap setup. Horrible AQ and heat at the same time.
The good news is we are likely done with upper 30s heat after this heatwave. Becomes hard to achieve such warm departures by late Aug with lower sun angles.

Re: August 2021 Forecasts And Discussions
What's interesting is that prior to 2007, the hottest day ever recorded at YXX was in September at 37.5C lol... I doubt we need a repeat of that this year hahawetcoast91 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 8:30 am Unfortunately the smoke will do little to mitigate warming but will actually trap heat during the evenings. Re: August 2021 Forecasts And Discussions
Dont worry. It will be November 30th and we will be complaining about the fact that its rained 28 out of the past 31 days with the models showing another 5 days of rain with an AR event and highs near +12.

I only ever complain about rain if it was originally supposed to snow!wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:05 am Dont worry. Re: August 2021 Forecasts And Discussions
The overall consensus on smoke from previous summers was that it had little impact on radiational cooling.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 8:30 am Unfortunately the smoke will do little to mitigate warming but will actually trap heat during the evenings. Re: August 2021 Forecasts And Discussions
Watervapour is efficently collected on particulates in the atmosphere which can really keep the RH% up. If thick enough, this can trap diurnal heat and release it at night.
It's all moot when the RH% is less than 20% like it is now at YYX. However the downsloping winds should keep temps up anyways.
Go to YVR for relief. NW breeze right.

Re: August 2021 Forecasts And Discussions
I also read some interesting articles on the colour of the smoke particles relating to the effect on daytime temperatures. Darker particles absorbed the sun and actually increased temperature whereas lighter particles reflected the suns energy and cooled the airwetcoast91 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 10:20 am Watervapour is efficently collected on particulates in the atmosphere which can really keep the RH% up.
