Looks like some improvement at the surface by Monday midday, but still a lot of smoke aloft.

1) No more mud or rock slides
2) No more forests and forest fires
3) More land to develop on and straighter roads
4) Colder and faster outflows for the Coast
#4 FTW.

wetcoast91 wrote: Sat Aug 19, 2023 12:52 pm I agree but one point of contention is that some records suggests ponderosa pine's being more vast in the impacted areas. Core samples out that way do suggest more extensive root structures under a lot of grasslands.

There's a reason why permanent homes and structures were never built in the hills. I'm shocked at the amount of sprawl going up the hills in the Okanagan and why this is being permitted.
It's simple whey homes are built up: there is no more room on the valley floor for suburban neighbourhoods. What isn't developed in the valley is ALR. What was taken out of the ALR in the early 90's (north Glenmore) was developed into suburbia in a couple years. I'm not unique in loathing "urban density." People like their plot of land and not a postage stamp where you share a building and your senses accosted by the neighbour's smoking dope 24/7. Suburbia: yes. Urban density: the eggheads that promote it can live in it. Although new single-detached are ridiculously priced, I don't blame people for wanting those homes in the hills. Kelowna is in quite a pickle. The reason I posted a picture of the quiet bridge yesterday is that it's normally bumper to bumper. The infrastructure in the city cannot support further growth. The roads there are for a city of 50k not 150k.

Fact is, Kelowna and area has been expanding into the hills for decades. My folks built their first home on Salloum Rd in Westbank in '87. That was a new development in the hills. A year later, we built in the then new subdivision of Cassiar on Dilworth. Some of the homes in the Clifton Rd area where the fire is have been there since the 70s. I was 13 when the fire happened on Mt Boucherie. I thought after watching that one-day event up close that this could and likely will happen to the hills around Kelowna. Best they can do if building into the sticks is what they did on Dilworth after '03: thinning out and trimming lower branches of the Ponderosas. It won't prevent a forest fire, but it would keep it low-intensity for subdivisions up there. Also, I remember when hiking in those mountains as a kid, some of the old, tall pine had evidence on their bark of surviving a forest fires from who knows when. That should have been a warning as well as to the regularity of forest fires.

Eggheads? Lol. I feel like now of all times is not a favourable time for you to be insulting those who champion urban density to promote sprawling up into ridiculously dangerous territory but here we are I guess.

We’re almost at the point where insurance companies will basically refuse to insure those houses anyways, except for the wealthiest of the wealthy.

Suburbia was always based on this dream that we will forever be blessed with unlimited resources. We are finding out how true that is. Now I see new suburbs it’s just cheaply made cookie cutter houses that look modern in all the worst ways.

But back to the situation in Kelowna, it’s no different than anywhere; there’s just not enough space for all these mini mansions, not enough roads for all these gas guzzlers, and not enough foresight and cooperation to correctly plan for certainties like the population booming. We have chosen this disaster.

I'm deleting any posts that are rude to other posters. We can discuss things without allowing our emotions to get involved. Once people stoop to rudeness or belittling other posters or their opinion, I am deleting those posts. If anyone finds themselves unable to remain respectful, they should do themselves a favour and take a break for now.
