Typeing3 wrote: Sat Jul 31, 2021 5:51 pm Very hot day across the southern interior today. Traveled along the crowsnest highway and smoke was once again worst in the valleys and mainly clear above 1,000m or so.

Castlegar-Trail valley (1st pic) probably had the worst smoke I've seen so far on my trip with fairly similar conditions seen on the Spences bridge-Ashcroft corridor eight days ago, where it was thick to the point like fog and lowering surface temperatures.

Still quite a bit of smoke in Rock Creek (2nd pic) but not nearly as thick at the surface so extreme heat was more of a concern. Keremeos-Princeton (3rd pic) it seems to be thick both at the surface and aloft.
Oh what fire was that from the Kettle valley rec. area? that looks absolutely sad.
I see the Keremeos turn off hasn't changed in years.
I remember going through there eastbound and just as you climbed that small incline to go to Penticton there was a new house on the right with a weather station on the roof, looked like a Davis.

Those charred trees are from that big fire north of Rock Creek back in 2014 or 2015 I believe. Only went as far as the rec area but I could see the black/bare trees on the mountainside stretching far to the north on highway 33.

Here's another pic I took of that area, showing the hills and mountains directly to the west of highway 33 at the Kettle River rec area:

O.k. l was going to mention the Rock Creek 🔥regardless it looks absolutely sad indeed.
So so many areas throughout B.C. look like that from past and present fires.
What a sad future for future generations to endure eventually things will green up but it will take years only to be burned out again eventually the cycle never ends.

In Princeton currently and there's been some tiny ash periodically falling along with fairly gusty winds at times. Suspect the ash is from the Garrison Lake fire near the east gate of Manning park.

Also was a bit of ash falling this morning in Castlegar, likely from the fires further north near upper arrow lake.

In the case of the Rock Creek area (and other valleys in the Southern Interior), it likely has a relatively high wildfire return rate... over the course of recent geological history at least, until recent widespread settlement. The natural state of these regions is predominantly as grasslands with scattered tree coverage, an ecosystem which has been shrinking in BC for over a century.

As you mention though the cycle doesn't really end. Obviously with drier and hotter springs/summers we run the risk of deadly wildfires but decades of fire suppression in some of these valleys can compound the risk.
