Jan 2020 was top tier. It was just short-lived.

Agreed. It was significant in terms of how cold it got, however, there was nothing really special about it. No memorable outflow wind or snowstorms. Just a week of really cold overcast conditions with some run of the mills snows with most of the snow events hitting everywhere around Abbotsford. At first glance one can say it broke the curse but after a bit of thought, it was honestly nothing compared to what we have experienced in the past.

Some localities did really well in terms of snow. I admit, I am biased because I live in Abbotsford, which sadly missed out on most of the snow events. I've never seen the donut hole so persistent in all my years of living here.

Yeah, it was. Most significant January event in quite some time.

In a historical context, it was not a top tier event for our region though.

I must say, I enjoyed the event personally. Memory isn't hitting me well but it was around -8c and snowing in the middle of the day felt nice. Doesn't happen that often anymore.

I think the big letdown was with us getting excited about what the GFS runs were showing prior to the event, even though we knew there was a little to no chance of those extreme solutions verifying. Its consistency got some of us wondering the impossible would happen. However, it did not.

Nice to see the cold air loading up in Yukon mid month. Rather see that as our cold air source rather than somewhere further east like the prairies which generally results in backdoor blasts.

Looks like a broad and strong Aleutian ridge and Greenland blocking too. Just need a SE ridge to keep the cold air from sliding into central and eastern north america. Maybe something interesting by late month or early Jan.
