When I lived in Portland I was miserable in late spring because the grass pollen levels would go through the roof there. It is a consequence of being in a valley were 80–90% of the world’s grass seed is raised, and lawn grasses in general ranking high on the list of allergenic pollens. Friends kept recommending this or that alternative medicine treatment to me, but the only thing that really helped was getting out of Portland. As soon as I left, springtime allergies went back to being a minor annoyance instead of a major deal.

Ragweed pollens are the other big allergens on my list, but ragweeds are not very common on the West Coast (we have only one species in this region, and it’s quite particular about where it grows, so there just isn’t very much of it). It’s a big part of why I refuse to consider moving to the eastern half of the continent.

The experts caution against trying to solve one’s allergy problems by moving, but it’s the one thing that’s really worked for me. (It’s worked in reverse, too; the times I’ve moved to the Midwest and the Willamette Valley, allergies went from being something minor to something major and life-impacting almost immediately.)

That said, many of the food sensitivities I have are linked to certain foods having proteins in them similar to pollen allergies I have.
It's called clown range for a reason.

My cousin was growing up in Chilliwack, and he was getting constant ear infections. The medial doctors were going to get tubes put in his ears, and my aunt said, "we are moving to Victoria, so can you find us a specialist there to deal with?"

And the doctor said, "actually, you won't need this if you move to Victoria because it's the pollution causing the ear infections."

Sure enough, as soon as they moved, the infections stopped.

Most of the time I only get hayfever when cutting really long grass but there were a few times I started sneezing randomly and having watery eyes when I wasn't cutting really long grass. I'm very thankful I don't think I have any diet-related allergies.
Ok
MAYDAY MAYDAY! We need some warm sunny weather this month. Some showers mixed in would be good too

Dust and pollen allergy symptoms seem to be caused by an overzealous immune system, the tiny particles trick the immune system into thinking it's the enemy ,like some kind of virus. It certainly sucks, like getting attacked by friendly fire. One thing that has worked for me is getting old  . Used to have bad allergies in the spring and then off and on for rest of the summer. Last few years have been really good, just something mild once in a while in Aug-Sept.

Hmmmmm. I suffered chronic and severe ear infections through childhood until I was basically an adult. And I grew up in the clean air on the island. I had tubes put in my ears 3 times and one infection was so severe it destroyed 2/3rds of one of my ear drums.

Ya, there are non-pollution reasons. I believe the doctor's words were more along the lines of "it MIGHT be caused by pollution so wait and see if it clears up." I should say, he did get some ear infections in Victoria, but they were few and far between, and not as severe.
