Forrest Gump wrote: Fri Jan 06, 2023 8:13 pm Come to think of it, wasn't Benning's main attribute his drafting prowess before he arrived? So far basically all they got to show for 8 years of jim's drafting is Pettersson, Hughes, Boeser, and Demko. The jury is still out on Boeser and Demko(injuries), and not counting Podkolzin,Hoglander and Rathbone as they are in the minors and who knows if they'll pan out. So Benning pretty well failed at everything, trades, free agents, drafting, PR, etc. Unfortunately we'll have to wait several more years now to see if current regime's draft record is any better, not off to a good start with 1st rounder Lekkerimaki. I'm guessing that at least half the roster of most NHL teams are their own draft picks..not us.
The Canucks could have had Sergechev or McAvoy in the 2016 draft. Both are doing very good. And yet, Benning drafted Juolevi who played couple games in the NHL before being traded. Had we not messed up on the draft that year, we wouldn't have needed to try to fix our blue line with ridiculous bad contracts such as Myers and OEL and the team would likely be a lot better. Now look at where we are. :x

That said, Pettersson at 5th and Hughes at 7th were good picks. However, as good as Pettersson is, it's too bad we picked 5th instead of 4th in 2017. Otherwise, we could have had Cale Makar. But given Bennings big misses in 2016, who knows if he even would have picked Makar.

No doubt. I'm following out of town scores now to see who we can put tank. Philly is pulling ahead of us, Ottawa too. A bunch of other teams are close. We need a high pick so badly.

That's nuts, how is that possible. Aren't they basically the same team as last year, except for one or two rookies and a new goalie? If they win the Cup, Ripley's Believe it or Not will come knocking.

Ripley's believe it or not, will also come knocking on the Canucks door, in the year 2525 , not because they finally won Sir Stanley but because they're still Cupless. And Hollywood will also come knocking with Cupless in Vancouver starring Dumb and Dumber and Dumbest.

Agreed but now there are rumours there will be a coaching change after the all star break. But why? Another short sighted move by this organization. We need a good draft pick. We don't need to slightly improve and still miss the playoffs but get an inferior pick. :x

Not to mention our problems are not Boudreau's fault at all. The main issues with this club is bad ownership, management, and a weak blue line.

To be honest, I think Rutherfords constant public criticism of Boudreau since last off season has at least somewhat contributed to the teams lack of success this season. How do you expect the players to continue buying into the coaches system when you keep publicly criticizing him? If you make it clear he's not your long term coach, don't expect the players to perform under him.

Not only did Rutherford act very unprofessional, he was also very disrespectful to his coach that nearly took the team to the playoffs against all odds. Further, he created unnecessary locker room toxicity that has likely contributed to the teams lack of success this season.

And then you have management clearly choosing Miller over Horvat, who is younger and their captain. What a joke. :14clown:  :x

Had a close encounter with Gino about 27 years ago..no, there was no skirmish or fisticuffs. I was on my way back from Montreal and had to land in Calgary for a connecting flight to Vancouver. While there at Calgary airport waiting for my luggage Gino comes up to me and he's in a panic and asks me whether I just came off the flight from Montreal. I just basically said yes, and he went on to say that he was waiting/looking for his wife in a sort of panicky tone , don't remember whether he found her or not. It happened so quick I didn't have a chance to say , " Hey , don't I know you from somewhere"?
Strange thing is a few years later I remember reading that he had like 4 or 5 wives , not ex's.

^ The only Canuck I ever met was Ryan Walters. He used to go fishing every summer near my place in the Chilcotin with his wife and kids. This was back when he was playing for the Canucks, so it was probably around 1992 when I met him.

No way , lol , I also have a Ryan Walters story. I believe he has 5 or 6 kids , 3 sons, and one of them Ryan Jr, was in the same elementary school class as my daughter , small private Christian school in South Surrey in mid 90's. In the early days the school was in the bottom floor of a church. After school,
parents would wait at the top of the stairs to pick up their kids, one day one of the students looked at me and said, " hey, there's that NHL hockey player!". I smiled and said, " Sorry, not me, you've got me mistaken for that guy over there" pointing to Ryan Walter. In hindsight I should've ran with it and asked if he wanted my autograph ,lol. Went on a few field trips together, mainly skating events. At some point they moved to Langley where he had a new log house built for themselves.

Well for all of his failings so far, I do enjoy Jim 2.0's quotes from time to time. I'm guessing he followed it up by saying we're not tanking and its a bad look for a franchise? (Despite the fact we are sucking regardless of how hard we try to compete)
