The New Climate Normals (1991-2020)

Post by Glacier »

We are less than a year away from a new normal time period. Of course, if EC is anything like they were back in 2010, it will take them several years to actually update the new normals, if they even bother.

Anyway, we can get a jump on it a little early to make up for their lateness...

The Fraser Valley is going to be over the 11 degree mark. Agassiz will average 11.1C (plus or minus a fraction of a degree based upon 2020 results). The current "normal" is 10.8C

Kamloops will go up from 9.4C to 9.6C

Penticton will go from 9.6C to 9.7C. So climate of Penticton is shifting to Kamloops (sort of... Kamloops still has hotter summers and colder winters).

Follow up to this post... just wondering if there were any minor changes since you posted these before 2020 was over.

Have you also complied the data for YXX?

Well, look at that! Climate normals are a mess because of Nav Canada taking over in the middle of the normals period. But at least they have something. It looks like they are merging several stations together to try and get enough data to create a normal. It's too bad they cut the all time record highs off at 2020 though because these don't include the 2021 heatwave.

EDIT: ONLY 11 stations for BC so far!

Last time around in 2010 there were 250 stations in BC with precipitation data. With this iteration there are only 23 with another 27 or so more being added later. Some additional stations have partial precipitation and temperature, but it's a crying shame they have no interest in calculating normals for places like Vavenby, Barkerville (one of the oldest stations in the province), Fort St. James (another old station), Castlegar, and Mica Dam.

Anyway, here is some data they have released.

Here is the winter precipitation amounts for all the BC weather stations that they are using for the 1991 to 2020 climate normals.

Fort Nelson has the driest winters in the province (of the places listed).

I posted a factoid online that according to the 1991-2020 database, Victoria is the driest place Canada in July and August. Drier than anyone in the southern interior and drier than Eureka, NU that barely gets more precipitation annually than Death Valley, CA. This, of course, really shocks people because they think of Vancouver Island as a some perpetual rainforest!

Anyway, someone I know said, "BS, you need to include data for Middle Lake down the West Branch Valley in the west Chilcotin!"

I don't have data for the forestry station at Middle Lake (does anyone here?), but there was a station west of there at Twist Lake (Sand Creek Ranch) between 1980 and 1995, so I looked at most stations in the Chilcotin, and compared to Tatlayoko Lake, and scaled to the 1991-2020 average.

Sure enough, my friend was right, the West Branch Valley is indeed very dry, and gets half of what the eastern parts of the Chilcotin plateau do in the summer, but it's not as dry as Victoria (although drier than the Victoria airport). At least, not where the weather station is situated.

FUN FACT: the relative humidity in southern BC is HIGHER in June than it is in May! For some places like Kamloops and Osoyoos, June is even more humid in the afternoon than April!
