This may come across as discriminatory but it may be time to incorporate winter weather driving training into licensing. It's clear we have a larger population that doesn't have a clue how to drive in these conditons. Far too many scenes of people not knowing how to deal with minor spinouts.

Many issues on the highway were caused by truck operators who had 18 wheeelers equipped with bald tires, no chains, traction strips or shovels.

Anyone hear the official reason why they were unprepared?

Oh man... I was too tired last night to post. It took me almost 2 hours to get home from south surrey to fraser heights.

All the hills basically were closed. I had to go through a bunch of side streets to miss the main roads which were ice basically.

After reading all the reports and the issues and people trapped for hours. A few things are clear. 1. Maintenance crews did NOTHING at the most crucial points like hills. 176 St hill was not passable, nor 168 or 152.. Easily could have been prevented with constant plowing and salting and sanding. 2 Use SAND! 3. Incompetent people on the roads. 4. Peopled dont pay attention to the news or weather because coverage is so poor, which brings me too... EC. EC dropped the ball and I think is the main reason all of this happened. A snowfall warning should have been issues the day before at 4pm so EVERYONE including employers could have planned for the next day correctly and had people stay home or leave before the snow started. 5am snowfall warning is too late and most people who woke up had to go on with their day. So EC is at the top of the blame, because it is THEIR duty to inform all of us EARLY enough to get ready. 5. The media. Media is a joke. Nobody takes them serious because they run the same crap over and over with no true report on actual journalism. So all the news stories before the storm were either sensationalist or just pathetic write ups of no true value. 6. Once it was snowing, people should have stayed where they were over night, not end up trapped on the road for 8 to 10 hours. Get a hotel or whatever. Lastly, Metro Vancouver is NOT prepared for ANY kind of disaster, PERIOD. Earthquake? Will be far worse than last night!! People are in denial and believe in some fake form of security here... for the people trapped on the highways, like I've said before, there needs to be far more on and off raps on our highways because then this would not happen as people could get off the road, once they were on the highway they were trapped. Period. Idiotic planning, just like the posts we were talking about a few days ago.

Hmmm. Seems to be a trend emerging of these troughs digging too far SW and blocks being a tad too far west. Hopefully that changes.

Yup. That's why I said it's not a perfect setup. But the overall pattern has potential with some adjustments to the ridge and trough position. Still lots of time to work out the details.

I am far too burned out to look at any models right now. What’s the story? Flurries Friday PM? Any chance of arctic air in the near term? I wouldn’t mind a pattern reset to set us up for Christmas.

Snow melting off the trees.

Models have sure trended dryer for today and tomorrow. It was looking very showery both rain and snow just 24-48hrs ago. Now looks like almost nothing.

Cooler air filtering in again.

This should help stop the melt.

And, we get the benefit of snow on the ground during the next chilly spell. Should help for some colder minima if it stays clear overnight.

Models have sure trended dryer for today and tomorrow. It was looking very showery both rain and snow just 24-48hrs ago. Now looks like almost nothing.

+6 in some areas already too. Could easily see some +7's and +8's

Yeah that does look like a something burger. Was starting to lose hope in all long range models. Honestly I'd prefer a wet rainy pattern, we don't want to go into next summer with this massive rainfall deficit.
