To be honest, I'd say 71-72 was a more complete winter than 70-71. The historic January 1971 snowstorm aside, that winter didn't feature all that much. In 1971-72 on the other hand, we had at least some snow on the ground (counting lawn piles :D ) for just about two months.

If we're talking just one event though, then the January 1971 snowstorm is among the all time greats for Metro Vancouver. I'd even say it tops the blizzard of '96 for these parts.

Awe man sorry yes Jan/71 was that just after New Years event closed schools down what a fun week. I do recall March 1st 71 a brief cold snap and snow March 2nd. But yes 71/72 was the one l was referring to and early April 72 snow event.

Yes, I should add we did have a notable snow/cold event in late Feb/early March 1971.

72/73 was a strong el Nino winter but we had a fairly significant arctic blast in early December 1972. Was comparable with the December 2013 cold snap... dry extreme backdoor blast only just a bit colder. The rest of the winter was pretty standard El Nino though. Christmas 1972 was mild and very wet. Pineapples!

Certainly a huge departure from the prior winter (71-72) which was persistently chilly with plenty of snow. Rain did come with brief warm-ups but not enough to melt the entire snowpack... like 2016-17 but colder with two classic cold snaps -- one in late December 1971 and another in late January 1972.

Those types of winters that remain chilly with persistent snow cover for at least a month are a lot less common these days. After 1992-93, we had to wait a long time for the next -- 2008-09, then 2016-17, and finally 2018-19.
