He's not entirely wrong. The EPS has a clear east signal in the long range. Hopefully it changes though.

The three model ensembles shows the East coast is scoring the week of Christmas. We have had lots of excitement already so whatever happens will happen.

PortKells wrote: Sat Dec 10, 2022 1:26 pm That was a cold one out there. We caught the edge of that airmass from about the 18th to the 29th but it was too far east to produce more than a skiff of snow for us and some flurries on Xmas day. Luckily I was in Kelowna which got absolutely nuked with snow that same system that gave the valley that insane ice storm.

Of course the east got that historic blast right after that. Then early Feb was looking like redemption but it all slid east. Eventually finally got hit when sun angles were a thing

That winter was hyped up to be a western one, was a huge dud in that context and the reason I still never read into seasonal forecasts. Also the reason I have a beef with eastern weenies.

It was an incredible ski season however.
That cold snap here in mid-late February 2018 was a decent weeklong event. A few hours of moderate-heavy snow and rapidly falling temps accompanied by the arctic front on the Sunday evening, heading into the cold snap for the week. Clear and chilly, then a few flurries with a coastal slider that brushed by us midweek, back to clear and chilly, followed by the overrunning event on Friday. North Shore and northeastern Metro Vancouver were the big winners with that snowfall. Was the last time my area picked up 30cm in 24hrs.

They also show a broad NPAC block though and the placement of that even a tad further west will let us score too. It could be a coast to coast event.

I remember that event well. It was a decent daytime storm too, I was at work in Edgemont Village at the time, parked my car on the street at the start of the day. The snow became heavy pretty quickly in that neighbourhood. By lunchtime I went out to move the car into the underground parkade so I wouldn't get stuck, and there was already about 6+" on the ground.

Does seem similar to the December 1983 event at face value. All depends on where the blocks set up. We got nailed with cold back then roughly between the 18th and 24th but the most anomalous stuff was definitely felt out east a few days later, especially in parts of the east/southeast US just after Christmas that year.

The high latitudes are blocked up on the models so a coast to coast arctic blast is possible depending on the exact placement of the polar lows. I think we will score at least a period of cold and maybe some snow.

Yes...like we need the perfect set up around these parts. I call it a 9/10. The other 1/10 is margin of error. We can maybe get snow that is too dry, too wet, or the moisture shuts off once it gets cold enough. Tell em Nito!!
