I’m just glad that there is a higher than usual chance of cold weather. I have family coming from Hawaii and Mexico for Christmas so I want the weather to be as wintry as possible

That’s very possible but I think there is still potential for the cold snap to persist longer than currently modelled. Previous runs had the trough further east in the long range but more recent runs have shifted it west. As was already pointed out here, there seems to be a model bias to slide the trough east in the longer range but then it ends up further west in reality. Last time, this worked against us as the trough went too far west and ejected most of the cold over the ocean. Time will tell but the trend may be in our favour.

My only thing is I haven't seen evidence of a south east ridge so if we were to stay cold it would have to be a very wide coast to coast air mass which is rare but possible.

You don’t necessarily need a SE ridge. It is sure nice to have, but mostly it is just a downstream effect of a NPAC block, especially a strong one.

But, I really do sense a coast to coast cold snap around Christmas. That would be pretty cool to see.
