I’ve been an air traffic controller for 10 years and I have never worked a night like that before. My colleague has been a YVR controller for 23 years and said the same.
We had airplanes littered across the apron. Airplanes running out of fuel. Airplanes declaring medical emergencies. It was like a game of chess moving things around the field.
Clearing guys to land and then finding a spot to park them was a mission to say the least.
We had guys deice and go to the runway. We would clear them for takeoff and they’d refuse because of deteriorating conditions. Only problem? Nowhere to put them.
I just got home and cracked open a beer. Time for some sleep, but I’ll have 3 munchkins awake in a bit.
Happy snow day, folks. Enjoy it.
