Yeah, I don’t get it myself. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to not be an asshole in life.

Had a couple close calls with getting soaked while unclogging the snow-covered drains on the street earlier today. Drivers going 70-80km/hr on a residential street...

"Soft parenting" teaches kids they can do whatever they want in life and consequences don't matter. People who weren't brought up that way simply can't comprehend it because it's unfathomable.

The thought of spraying someone with disgusting slush is something that I can't possibly imagine. Even just driving that speed down a residential street is way off to me.

As a parent of 3 kids, I can ensure you it’s far more complicated than “soft parenting.” We certainly aren’t strict with our kids and give them a lot of leeway, but also emphasize empathy and accountability. So far, so good.

My impression of soft parenting is no accountability so maybe Im thinking of a different term, my bad. I have people in my life who have zero accountability for their kids. Their kids are absolutely terrible. No empathy, no boundaries, nothing. They don't believe in saying no to their kids. You can easily see where these adult behaviors originate.

If there's a different term to describe that, my apologies. Point is, bad parenting everywhere!

I really wouldn't characterise it that way John. It's prevalent across the newer generations, regardless of politics. I feel I can say this because I grew up with the generation which are becoming parents now. I see the rot everywhere.

I actually tie the decline of society to an erosion of traditional social mores, caused by excessive consumerism and late stage capitalism. This has shifted the focus away from the collective to the self.

My belief is that if we don't correct our course, then humanity's best days are behind us. I hope to be wrong, but it's not looking good. That's why I believe it's so important to just do good in the small spheres which I can influence.

Any further discussion is probably best saved for the politics thread, but I felt this warranted at least an initial response.

Yes my bad for redirecting the discussion but you summed it up much better than I. Decline in proper parenting isn't a partisan political problem so much as one symptom of a deeper issue. We need society to pull together or it doesn't work. People splashing each other is just another sign of it not working.

It is semi relevant to weather like this in terms of human behaviour but probably not enough to go into a deep discussion here. I also think it's tough to redirect these things into those smaller threads as participation is sparse in the general discussion thread, except for maybe sports and gas prices.

This is why we need the resources for the city to do this. Up in Prince George all the sidewalks are plowed by the city. The whole bylaw thing doesn't work. Why are only roads plowed and not the entire public infrastructure? Imagine if we made homeowners clear the roads as well?
Why not try cycling to work, grocery store, anywhere!

If the city can have resources to plow roads they should be able to have resources for sidewalks as well, at least on plowing routes anyway.

This will be my final say on the matter, and we can discuss it elsewhere. It's an easy cop out to suggest it all falls on bad parenting. Especially from those who aren't parents. Most parents I know are doing the very best that they can with what they have. It's survival. Especially the first few years. You have good days and bad days and everything in between. Most days you aren't thinking about far reaching existential quandaries. You're just trying to get through the day, survive, and hope you can enjoy as many of the moments that soon will be a distant memory.

The problems in society are many and complex. Let's take it easy with the blame game.

Anyway, on that topic, I am done.

Merry Christmas.
