I’d give the last event an A- or a B+. Definitely not an A+. It wasn’t super-cold or super-long-lasting, and the snow amounts IMBY were decent but not extraordinary, Last December’s cold snap was colder, longer-lasting, and snowier IMBY,.

Fair enough. However short it was I just found getting 50 cm of powder snow to be extroardinary around these parts and extremely rare. I know some folks got less or prefer other types of events more so I only speak for myself.

The winter as a whole so far stands at roughly C+

I've picked up 70 mm of rain since Christmas Day.

A chilly -10c this am. Looks like a weak front will produce some flurries later today. Possibly 2 to 4 cms tomorrow will the next front. Highs should be around -3c the next cupla days.
Snowpack: a solid, dense ~18" of very compacted snow. Complete blizzard conditions here a few days ago, prior to the zr event. Extensive blowing and drifting snow one day for the entire day, with almost zero visibility.
And the trouts were out for those that love fishing. Me n buttee limited out in less than 2 hours ice fishing.

I’m at 104mm since Christmas Eve. We had 45 cm of snow which was decimated with rain and 11 degree southwest winds. Quite the difference this week vs last.

If I had gotten a 35 cm dump of powder IMBY, I would have graded this one higher. But I barely got within 10 cm of that.

City of Saskatoon activates emergency roadways plan in response to days of snow

When Saskatoon carollers sang it was going to be a white Christmas, they likely didn't expect this.

Saskatoon has had 34 centimetres of snow since Dec. 25, continuing what has already been an abnormally snowy winter, according to Goran Saric, the city's roadways director. There have been a total of 90 centimetres of snow in the city so far this winter, he said.

The city has now activated its roadways emergency response plan "for public safety and to restore mobility on all Saskatoon streets and sidewalks," Saric said.

Over the next week and a half the city will clear streets and pedestrian pathways, starting with the highest priority streets including freeways, expressways, bridges and ramps, and clearing access to emergency facilities and critical city services, according to the plan.

"Our crews have been working steadily since Christmas Day and pretty much all winter, because this winter we've had six [snow] events already," Saric said, noting that there are typically five or six snow events in an entire winter season.

He said a snow event is any snowfall above five centimetres and the Roadways Emergency Response Plan can be initiated with snowfalls greater than 25 centimetres. The city got 21 cm on Christmas Day and another 13 cm Tuesday night.

A snowfall warning issued for Saskatoon by Environment Canada for has since ended.

The roadways plan details eight weeks of snow removal, from high priority streets to the lowest priority of improving sight lines and removing snow for parking availability.

Saric said that in a similar storm in November 2020, there were 200 pieces of equipment working on the snowfall removal and expects there will be a comparable response this time around.

He said the city is doing everything it can reduce traffic collisions and drivers becoming lodged in the snow.

"In a situation like this where the whole city is impacted and we are well aware of all the concerns we are trying to prioritize our activities," Saric said.

He said priority streets are expected to be completed in four days.

Saric added that Saskatoon Transit is not reporting any major delays.

The city said services that have been affected, like waste collections, will resume as soon as possible.
