That is a great snow map. Looks like a big stationary shower blows up over western parts of the metro area and just sits there dumping.

Persistent -PNA pattern with a -NAO developing into early March. I don't think this upcoming arctic blast will be the last one this winter.

Is 1897 the most anomalous March arctic blast in recorded history??

In my opinion, March 1897 does not even come close to comparing with 1951 and 2002. Both were significantly snowier. But 1897 was still anomalous in that it's unusual to get sub freezing temperatures so late in the season especially mid-March.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if something like that verified given what the ensembles show. We can all thank the recent SSW event.

If we're talking snow, yes for sure!

But in terms of cold anomalies (hence why I said arctic blast), not sure if anything in recorded history in mid-March comes close.
