That’s true, but I’d personally trade in much of the accumulation in exchange for seeing heavy snow fall in daylight.

Just as everyone predicted, a classic Saltspring Island Bullseye

Won't be good for all the tropical plants they got growing out there!

Saltspring Island itself is a banana belt within the South Coast banana belt.

On Salt Spring Island they are now growing olives. Not only olives, but bananas, palm trees, limes, figs, hops and grapes growing in abundance.

The view of the valley below from the garden at the Salt Spring Winery is terrific, but if you know where to look you’ll also spot an olive grove that has just been planted. This is the hottest location on the island, not only in its real estate location but in climate. The Garry Oaks and Salt Spring Island Wineries have been growing their own grapes here for several years, and now olive trees are basking in the sun.

Salt Spring enjoys the finest weather in Canada, a microclimate fondly referred to as the Banana Belt. South facing hills on the island are warm enough to grow fruit, figs and (thanks to local resident Banana Joe Clemente) palm and banana trees are starting to appear in select locations. Abundant rain fills the many little lakes in the winter to provide a water supply, but summer is one long dry season that allows local farmers to grow a wide variety of organic vegetables, and now tropical fruit. Bananas actually growing in the Banana Belt? Who knew? It may not be climate change, but it sure is a big change from just a few years ago, when you bought your tropical fruit at the supermarket.
