Smoky in Kelowna. Firesmoke.ca has smoke getting out to the coast by tomorrow.

We can hope the smoke saves us from the potential upcoming heatwave. Although, thick smoke is awful. So I guess take your pick.

It was 11 years ago this long weekend the Mrs and I took off to Mt St Helens. It was stifling hot. Here's three of the many pictures I took. I was only 14 months old when the big event happened, so I don't have any memories of it. But when I saw a 10 year anniversary documentary at the age of 11 about it, I got hooked on learning all about the eruption and the people and places it impacted.

One of the pics is at the Johnston Ridge Observatory in the foreground. The one pic directly of St Helens was also at the observatory. We walked along the ridge and the air had an acrid smell to it. The other picture is the south end of the renewed Sprirt Lake. After the eruption the lake bed was 150 ft higher, and the lake was broader. This means that this glimpse of the south end of the lakes was where Harry R Truman's Mt St Helens Lodge was. Incredible to fathom.

I had a thorough academic understanding of the eruption, but to see it for yourself brings a deeper reality to how widespread that lateral blast was. At least for folks like David Johnston and Harry Truman, a 600F pyroclastic flow at 400mp/h fortunately meant death was instantaneous when the landslide and pyroclastic flow it.

I was at manning park doing some fishing at Lightning Lakes when I heard a loud bang,had no idea what happened until got home and turned on the news. Surprised Sardineman would have heard it in kits with all the city noise.

It was 8:30a.m. Skipper Gimps on a long weekend couldn't have been more quieter than being in church just worked out perfect for being able to hear the concussion blast l suppose. It's currently 27c @ the pond in south Sardis say we sent out the search party over Gilligan's island but couldn't find you.

Re: Saint Helens, I was just a child and we lived in Guildford area and we also heard the bang. My parents thought I fell off the bed or something. It was pretty loud.

I like the smell of the smoke. Reminds me of when I used to fight fire. That said, it's really bad for people who have asthma, so heat is probably better overall.
