Looks like people are trying to get on the January train. I’ve been on that for a couple months already. 🥶 🚂

I always enjoy reading his analysis. Very detailed but still understandable for the average weather weenie. Encouraging to see there might at least be a small window for us in January to see some winter weather.

Typical Nino behaviour. It was becoming pretty obvious early on that December was going to be an unmitigated blowtorch. That leaves us with the early to mid January window after the jet retracts. If we see something I’ll bet it happens before the 20th or so.

Pretty gross looking weather between the 25th and 28th. With the potential for a couple big rainmakers with high freezing levels. 🤮

Extended GEFS still liking the week 2 period in Jan for some below normal temps.

It has been consistent for a while now.

We'll see what happens I guess.

Hopefully Monty's call works out!

It appears the the ensembles (GEFS, EPS) are starting to kill off that troff in the Pacific near the tail end of their runs. That would be the start of the pattern change that may or may not lead to some actual winter weather around here.

In the meantime....

Higher alpine will see wet pasty snow. This could form a really unstable base leading to a ton of avalanches in January if that cooler pattern comes to fruition.

Our eldest of three kids just turned seven. Every year we’re in Kelowna between Christmas and New Year at my folks’ place. The kids haven’t experienced a snowless holiday season there. I explained there won’t be snow there, but it didn’t compute. I booked a sleigh ride on Boxing Day at Big White. Even if it’s slop in the alpine at the coast, Big White does okay retaining its snowpack during these types of winters. Best we can do is wish-casting on those long-range ensembles.
