I think they have a short memory there. I’m sure it got comparably cold in Feb 1989 and Dec 1990.
It's called clown range for a reason.

In Feb 1989, I was still in Victoria. It was cold enough, that we were able to walk on Goodacre lake in Beaconhill Park.
