Let's keep climate discussion in the climate change thread. I can move the posts over later.

Shades of 2015, 2010, 1992, 1977, and 1970. Might be missing a few other years but seldom is the snowpack across the south coast mountains this low by early February.

9:54 PM AST Friday 2 February 2024

A prolonged period of snowfall is expected.

Locations: Central and eastern Nova Scotia.

Total snowfall amounts: 30 to 40 cm for central Nova Scotia with up to 80 cm or possibly higher for eastern mainland and Cape Breton.

Time span: Tonight until Monday.

Remarks: A low pressure system southwest of Nova Scotia will slowly track eastward tonight. This low will intensify on Saturday and stall southeast of the province resulting in a prolonged period of snow for the region. There will be a brief break in heavy snow overnight Saturday, before intensifying again on Sunday morning.

Additionally, increasing northeasterly winds could result in reduced visibilities in blowing snow over exposed areas tonight and into the weekend.

Snow will taper to flurries Sunday night into Monday.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Heavy snowfall accumulation may cause tree branches to break.

Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NSstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #NSStorm.

The EC forecast is deteriorating for next week. Two days ago it said a mix of sun and cloud on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Now it says cloudy all three days with a chance of showers.

It can be hard to buy sunshine with this type of split flow pattern. There's no wind to scour out the gunk, and the sun is still too low to burn it off. Probably the worst aspect of our climate. Boring, dreary, listless weather pattern.

Looks kind of chilly at times the next week to 10 days. Heavier showers could occasionally knock snow levels down below 300m. I think the second half of February turns pretty ridgy with more sun and frosty mornings with mild afternoons.
