My theory is that longer, hotter summers and a warmer climate causes a delay in the onset of winter.. This seasonal lag also affects how long it takes the ocean temperature to cool down, delaying the feeling of being in the "middle of winter." So now February is the coldest month.

Again, I'm probably completely wrong, but it made sense in my brain.
I would expect March to be much more of a winter month if that was so. Instead, it is decidedly a spring month. I have observed more snow fall in the first week of November than in the entirety of March. While part of that is due to my March snow jinx, it is still the case that November is by far a snowier month, with by far many more good cold snaps on the books.
It's called clown range for a reason.

That is an 8.7 at YVR… and MBY normally gets more snow than the airport does.

A counter-argument is that March already has higher sun angles, and with our microclimates, it is not likely to produce snow. With a warming climate, we warm quicker.

And speaking of the last few years only, again, who knows? Time will tell. If we score again this month and it happens again next February, we definitely need to revisit this and have a conversation about why.
