Happy March! This is the last month of the first quarter already. We get more evening daylight in just over a week.

I am sorry but that is just mean and uncalled for. No need to start my least favourite month two days early.stuffradio wrote: ↑Fri Feb 27, 2026 6:53 am Happy March! This is the last month of the first quarter already. We get more evening daylight in just over a week.
It's called clown range for a reason.

I was up at manning again today. We badly need this. The snow pack is still a joke even after Mondays dump. I’m sure it’s even worse closer to the coast where they got very little.

Re: March 2026 Forecasts and Discussions
Several weeks ago the Govt stats said the Similks (southern part i would guess) was at 140% of snowpack. Meantime, North Similks was hurting bad. Kamloops was at 40% same timeframe, which my guess would have been what the North Similks also had, or close to it. I saw it. It was very troubling, as this will be the 3rd year in a row with Lower snowpack, capped by this years disaster low amounts causing some rather severe drought this summer for sure. The threat is real buttees

Re: March 2026 Forecasts and Discussions
That seems weird, given what I saw. However, the southern Similkameens is a large area and probably has a lot of variability. That section of Highway from Hope to Manning you barely see snow until you get to the resort elevation, and then it's sparse. At the ski hill you can still see the creeks flowing, there's rocks, dirt and all kinds of vegetation popping up on southern facing slopes. It's not pretty. For those cheering for an early spring...not sure you're going to like the longer term result of that.Hawk wrote: ↑Sat Feb 28, 2026 11:34 am Several weeks ago the Govt stats said the Similks (southern part i would guess) was at 140% of snowpack. Now it's warm and dry again. Needs several more chilly systems to pass through here.

Re: March 2026 Forecasts and Discussions
A healthy alpine snowpack is reliant on seasonal freeze-thaw periods to get a thick dense base that doesn't erode so quickly. This region needs Jan and Feb snow. Any net gain in snow here onwards does nothing as there's no real sublayer to keep it in place.PortKells wrote: ↑Sat Feb 28, 2026 12:14 pm That seems weird, given what I saw. Hmm. That's not good news then. I skied in 30 ish cm of powder on Monday and it was tough because the icy underlayer was still very noticeable when trying to make tight turns.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 28, 2026 1:21 pm A healthy alpine snowpack is reliant on seasonal freeze-thaw periods to get a thick dense base that doesn't erode so quickly. I still think we've seen years where the March snow train boosted us significantly but then, maybe not. 2018 was a huge snowpack after April and it kind of melted completely in that hot May and the fire season exploded.

Re: March 2026 Forecasts and Discussions
As expected, the troughing signal has been cancelled out. Cold returns to the East and we will likely see a early-mid March heatwave. I am thinking we see a warm April-May as well this year.

Re: March 2026 Forecasts and Discussions
-0.5˚C and frosty. On Friday, EC was saying it would be 3˚C this morning, after a clear night. Frost is common, basically typical, after a clear night this time of year. I knew that forecast was going to bust like this.
Just comically bad. Sure, it’s just an inversion and it’s milder aloft. So what? That forecast was supposed to be for surface conditions. Inversions are common on clear, still nights. People care about whether they will have to spend a few extra minutes scraping off their car in the morning. They don’t care so much about what the weather is doing 500 m above their heads.
