This is interesting, the December 24 2008 snowstorm featured a -PNA but had a +EPO. Look at how far west that ridge is on the map. Must have been the track of the low, cold trough, and residue arctic air that allowed temperatures to be cold enough for snow.

“Troffs” still merge but that block is stronger on the 00z, could lead to colder solutions down the line.
