Re: January 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
Snowstorm Alert!
It has been a very interesting week on the west coast. It started off slowly but then spread to all regions of the Lower Mainland. Everyone was experiencing outflow winds and snow right down to sea level. This included Richmond, Ladner, and heading south, even Bellingham. Victoria even got an unexpected snowstorm out of this. This last week was indeed filled with surprises.
The biggest surprise was the models and forecasters failing with the south winds and temperature rise. This did not occur except for some sea level communities near the water. The cold really stood it's ground this time.
Now, for tonight?
Expect snowfall warnings to be posted shortly.
This could get ugly near the end, but for now, let's go with what will happen.
It will snow over the entire Lower Mainland starting this evening mostly after the sun sets and darkness has fallen.
All areas will see snow at first. Including sea level. This could continue over night.
Higher elevations, and areas that have already seen over 30CM of snow so far will score big again.
20CM of snow is possible over higher elevations.
The Fraser Valley may see quite the storm tonight and into tomorrow. Lot's of snow, and the possibility of freezing rain.
BUT:
If this cold air continues to be stubborn, then we might not see a changeover until Saturday night, or even longer the further East you go, say Chilliwack and or Hope.
Whatever the case, tomorrow morning will be a mess.
This snow will be wetter and heavier than the last couple of days.
Looking at EC's forecast for the next few days, and looking back on them from the past few days. EC has been wrong with all the daytime highs and lows by at least 5C too warm. This week may not even get above 3C in higher elevations due to already having a deep snow cover and if this storm delivers it will be even deeper. I think temps will remain low this week, and look to take another dive near the end of next week (Fri.24th) We could see more snow by then, at least some models are pointing this way. If the winds forecast fail to materialize AGAIN, then this will help you snow lovers out a lot. It was a sure thing when the winds were forecast a few days ago but it was a complete failure. Perhaps again?
So many variables again tonight, it will be another nowcast. Even the rest of the week looks to be a mixed bag and may contain some surprises as we move towards the weekend.
Get ready for one more blast of winter tonight!
Enjoy!
Sea Level = 10CM
Higher Elevations = 20CM
Inland/Higher Elevations = 20 - 30CM possible.
*All areas with chance of freezing rain = East of Abbostford.
These are rough estimates based on what has happened this week so far and what I see now as a possibility.

Oh wow, good thing you had a wood stove, sounds like you survived being off the grid .... Welcome back!!Roberts Creeker wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:26 am +1.0 and rising, was -1 around 9:30 am
Snow cover is down to about 1" most of it disappeared during the wind storm.
Blue sky with a few fluffy white clouds.
I'm back! Did I miss anything?![]()

Power (and internet, phone and water) were off from Wednesday at 8:30 pm until 2am this morning, sure happy to have a wood stove, kept me warm and I cooked a delicious meal in it and toast on top.
We all received snow and lots of it..some more than others. You must have been really hammered by the wind storm??

Re: January 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
As a side note, the water temp of the Fraser River has dropped significantly over the last week. Most of the water coming from the interior has been cooled to near 3C and this is sending ice flows down the river and into the ocean which is now cooling the waters near shore at the mouths of the Fraser River in Delta/Richmond/South Van. This is always a bonus because it does have a minor effect on temps at sea level near shore. Just an interesting point I thought I would mention.

Looks like a few incoming (from the south) showers here. We’ll see if they hold together as they pass over the Chuckanut Mountains. Current temperature: -1˚C. High today: 0.
It's called clown range for a reason.

That is an interesting point, wouldn't have considered that. So appreciate that you take the time to write an in depth weather report/ synopsis....on with the snow!WeatherPro wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 3:43 pm As a side note, the water temp of the Fraser River has dropped significantly over the last week. you can see this in the Delta Slough by the Massey Tunnel, pretty much a thin layer of ice over the entire slough and out into the Fraser there's chunks floatingWeatherPro wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 3:43 pm As a side note, the water temp of the Fraser River has dropped significantly over the last week. Hmmm. If WP nails this..it will be amazing. Models i looked at have S winds kicking it in throughout S BC pretty quick. Cant see how the cold will survive that long this time. Nito will be warm bias..WP cold.

Re: January 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
5-10cm changing to rain very early tomorrow morning. 10mm of ZR for the valley tomorrow afternoon. Dont see how the low level cold survives without outflow winds and gradients fall overnight after the initial wave.
Hope will not see a changeover until Sunday morning.
