The New Climate Normals (1991-2020)

Post by Glacier »

We are less than a year away from a new normal time period. Of course, if EC is anything like they were back in 2010, it will take them several years to actually update the new normals, if they even bother.

Anyway, we can get a jump on it a little early to make up for their lateness...

The Fraser Valley is going to be over the 11 degree mark. Agassiz will average 11.1C (plus or minus a fraction of a degree based upon 2020 results). The current "normal" is 10.8C

Kamloops will go up from 9.4C to 9.6C

Penticton will go from 9.6C to 9.7C. So climate of Penticton is shifting to Kamloops (sort of... Kamloops still has hotter summers and colder winters).

Follow up to this post... just wondering if there were any minor changes since you posted these before 2020 was over.

Have you also complied the data for YXX?

Well, look at that! Climate normals are a mess because of Nav Canada taking over in the middle of the normals period. But at least they have something. It looks like they are merging several stations together to try and get enough data to create a normal. It's too bad they cut the all time record highs off at 2020 though because these don't include the 2021 heatwave.

EDIT: ONLY 11 stations for BC so far!

Last time around in 2010 there were 250 stations in BC with precipitation data. With this iteration there are only 23 with another 27 or so more being added later. Some additional stations have partial precipitation and temperature, but it's a crying shame they have no interest in calculating normals for places like Vavenby, Barkerville (one of the oldest stations in the province), Fort St. James (another old station), Castlegar, and Mica Dam.

Anyway, here is some data they have released.
