Re: April 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
On some warm, cloudless days, I can see cumulus clouds churning over the North Shore Mountains. On other days, like today and yesterday, I see no clouds even over the mountains. Why?
And here's a bit of history: I have dug up newspaper articles about thunderstorms in the Lower Mainland from the 80s and early 90s. The articles came from Canadian Newsstand via my library card. It would be a lot easier if the Sun, Province and Burnaby Now had full online archives for free. The dates of the storms are 7/27/87, 6/1/88, 5/17/89, 7/10/89, 7/24/91 and 6/15/93.
You can find the articles here. Do you have any memories of these storms?

Re: April 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
Brush fire near Chilliwack today. This is alot like Spring 2015 and April 2016 with the dryness. Ridge breaking down later next week. I hate to say it but that's a good thing we need some rain. The water levels are fine and won't be a problem due to the snowpack but it's the dry soils. I was walking in the woods in Pacific spirit and the forest seem tinder dry like mid summer.

Insane how fast it dries out after quite a wet winter.Coquitlam79 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 5:05 pm Brush fire near Chilliwack today. This is alot like Spring 2015 and April 2016 with the dryness. Currently 13ËšC after a high of 21ËšC. Patchy frost this morning. Temperature swing reminds me of the mountains of New Mexico.
It's called clown range for a reason.

Re: April 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
My guess is some of those cumulus mountain days are still a little troffy..much like the last several weeks. Now we are under a solid ridge.NorthBurnabyWeather wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:56 pm On some warm, cloudless days, I can see cumulus clouds churning over the North Shore Mountains. Yes I remember some of those t storms in the 80s and 90s. One outstanding one about 27 years ago in August was an amazing light show. Hot during the day then black clouds moving in from the south and east. Massive line of lightning strikes moving in from the SE. I was driving back from Kitsilano Beach to Coquitlam and I would say that's one of the best thunderstorms I ever remember.
It seems that recently for the last 20 or so years our snow events and thunderstorm events have been watered way down. They just don't happen so much anymore.
Looking forward to our first 3 day stretch of sun and 20c++

Re: April 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
I could be way off here, but if I had to hazard a guess, it would probably have to do with the flow aloft in the vicinity of the mountains. Winds out of the S, SW, etc rise against the terrain and you have cloud development as the air ascends and cools, the other way around and you get subsidence and no cloud development.NorthBurnabyWeather wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:56 pm On some warm, cloudless days, I can see cumulus clouds churning over the North Shore Mountains.
