At a much more local level, I think building codes will need to be looked at. Mandatory A/C for any long term care homes should be a must, unless it already is. I'm not entirely sure.

After 1000ish people died in BC with that last heat wave, AC should be MANDATORY in ALL buildings like it is in Japan. All homes should have AC and be retrofitted for AC with air filter options. I don't know how ANY new highrise can get away with NOT putting in AC, although I have no idea what the regulations are in BC for that considering they are already built with shoddy construction for as cheap as possible.

Apparently many long term care homes in Kelowna don't have A/C in residential rooms. The reason given was that the elderly and frail like the heat and that there are dangers of the room getting too cold if the unit was left running too long.

In my opinion, however, the reasons given seem like an excuse to not invest money into upgrading the facilities with A/C in all rooms.

There is a reason air conditioning units have a feature that allows you to adjust the temperature. Its so that you can ensure the room does not get too hot or too cold. There's no way that an A/C unit, which has been setup and maintained properly would pose any risks.

The article also states that the elderly and frail enjoy the heat. But thats a subjective statement. How hot are we talking? I enjoy the heat too but not when it gets above 30C. Some people may enjoy it until it gets to 35C etc. The fact is that if its 35C outside, its likely significantly hotter in a non A/C room, especially if its on the 2nd or 3rd floor etc. I doubt most if anybody likes to be in a room thats 40C and above.

I personally see no valid excuse for any long term care home to not have A/C in all rooms, especially in a hot climate.

Hopefully but the NBM has been warming in latest runs. I'd be surprised if we hit 40C though. We would likely need a thermal trough for that, which would likely usher in a thick layer of smoke. Its unlikely that we would see extreme (40C+) heat under a thick layer of smoke.

Ya, my co-worker is a new teacher and he was doing fill ins this past spring and into summer and he said all the schools he sub'ed in were hot as heck, and no airflow. Plus he said they were not allowed to run fans so it was just sickeningly hot in the rooms. See this is the type of BS that has NO EXCUSE to not be fixed! Every classroom should have AC and have filtered or circulated air.
